A woman from Illinois has experienced an emotional reunion with her chihuahua, Flor, who had been missing for nearly twelve years. The little dog was discovered in Indiana after being stranded following severe weather conditions, and her identity was confirmed through a microchip by dedicated volunteers.

Vanessa Antonino’s bond with Flor began over a decade ago, but the two were separated when Antonino found herself living in and out of her car. At that time, Antonino did everything possible to keep her beloved pet with her while she worked, unwilling to give her up. Tragically, one day she returned to her vehicle only to find that Flor had vanished. Canine Director Tanya Ohanian from the Evanston Animal Shelter believes that Flor was most likely stolen, noting that animal control typically would have posted notices about a missing dog.
In the years following Flor’s disappearance, Antonino held onto the hope that her pet was safe, despite the overwhelming guilt she felt over being unable to find her. Ohanian recalls Antonino’s words, “I had no money, I had no resources. Like I tried my best to find her, and I just couldn’t.” Throughout those years, Antonino never stopped wondering what might have become of Flor, often praying for her well-being.
The unexpected turn of events occurred when Flor was found by a volunteer assisting with storm damage in Indiana. The little chihuahua was discovered stranded by the side of the road and was taken to the Griffith Indiana Animal Control & Shelter. Thanks to the efforts of the shelter and a company known as Microchip Hunters, Flor’s microchip information was traced back to Antonino.
The moment Antonino received the call from the shelter was surreal. “When I got the phone call, they’re like, ‘Is this Vanessa?’ When they said they had Flor, I couldn’t believe it; I hadn’t heard her name in years,” she recounted. The collaboration between Griffith Indiana Animal Control & Shelter, Microchip Hunters, and the Evanston Animal Shelter facilitated the reunion, and volunteers rallied to ensure Flor was returned to her owner.
Just a day later, a volunteer from the shelter generously offered to drive the distance to collect Flor and bring her back to Antonino. “The reunion was so emotional. One that was written in the stars,” noted the Evanston Animal Shelter on social media. When she finally saw Flor again, Antonino was overcome with emotion, stating, “I just bawled. I broke down completely. She was back with me. A piece of my heart was back with me.”
The joy of this reunion also extended to Antonino’s family, as her children were delighted to see Flor return home. Indeed, as Antonino explained, “I missed years with her, her knowing her brothers. They all know about her,” reflecting on the gap in their lives.
What is particularly noteworthy about this reunion is the passage of time. Flor is now approximately sixteen years old, which is quite an achievement for a chihuahua, a breed known for its longevity. Ohanian remarked that the years they spent apart felt like a lifetime, emphasising that such a reconnection after so long is a rarity in the world of pet ownership.
Maddie Ratkowski, a volunteer at the Evanston Animal Shelter, expressed amazement at the story, describing the reunion as “heartwarming and touching.” She noted that it is not common to see an animal reunite with their original owner after so many years. “The stars aligned for this, and it was just perfect,” Ohanian concluded.
