**Uber Introduces Live Video Streaming for Teen Rides**

Uber has announced the launch of an innovative feature that allows parents and guardians to monitor their teenage riders in real-time via live video streaming. This new service, aimed at enhancing safety for young users, is currently being rolled out across nine markets in the United States and is set to expand to more areas in the near future.
On 25 August, Uber revealed that this live streaming function is part of an initiative designed specifically for its teen accounts, which connect the ride-sharing service with a parent or guardian’s account. This feature enables teenagers to independently request rides while ensuring that an adult can keep track of their trips.
When a teenager begins their ride, the linked parent or guardian will receive a notification allowing them to access a livestream from the driver’s smartphone camera. The livestream is designed to provide a real-time view of the journey, thereby offering peace of mind to those watching from home.
In a message shared via X, previously known as Twitter, Uber highlighted the timing of the rollout, noting, “Just in time for back-to-school! We’re rolling out live video streaming for teen rides, a new feature that gives parents a way to check in on their teen’s trip in real time.”
Both the teen and the driver are informed when the video is being streamed to ensure transparency. The livestream ceases automatically once the ride concludes, adding a layer of security for all parties involved.
Uber has emphasized that the livestream is encrypted, which means that only the designated parent or guardian can view the feed during the ride. The company confirmed to PEOPLE that it does not have access to the live video while trips are in progress. Additionally, recordings made during the ride are stored on Uber’s servers and can only be accessed if a safety incident is reported, ensuring that the privacy of users is protected.
Notably, these recordings are not retained indefinitely. According to the company, they will be automatically deleted after a period of 14 days unless linked to a safety report. This safeguard is meant to reassure both parents and teenage riders that their privacy is respected.
The live video feature is contingent upon drivers activating Uber’s Record My Ride functionality and enabling streaming on their devices. Drivers can deactivate this feature if they choose, allowing for flexibility in how they use the service. Moreover, in the event that the livestream is disrupted due to connectivity issues or technical problems, parents will be notified immediately.
Currently, the service is available in several US cities, including Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Portland, San Antonio, Cleveland, Rhode Island, and El Paso. With plans for further expansion, Uber aims to roll this feature out to additional markets across the United States in the coming weeks.
The introduction of live video streaming complements a suite of other safety features already available through Uber’s teen accounts. These include trip tracking, PIN verification, and audio recording. Since launching the teen account initiative in 2023, Uber has expanded its services to over 50 countries, with families completing millions of trips under this programme.
As ride-sharing continues to evolve, features such as live video streaming underscore Uber’s commitment to safety, particularly for its younger users. By offering parents the ability to stay connected during their children’s journeys, Uber hopes to foster a greater sense of security and trust in the use of its services.
