The closing announcement comes shortly after the show celebrated its 2,000th performance on 17 August, solidifying its position as the longest-running production in the theatre’s history and ranking as the 40th longest-running show in the annals of Broadway.
‘SIX’ launched its Broadway journey under unique circumstances, having originally planned to open on 12 March 2020, a date that coincided with the abrupt shutdown of theatres due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite starting previews, the show was forced to delay its official opening for over a year. Eventually, it premiered on 3 October 2021, marking the first new musical to debut following the extensive theatre closures.
Since its opening, ‘SIX’ has become one of the defining successes of contemporary musical theatre, receiving eight nominations at the Tony Awards in 2022 and winning two: Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, attributed to the talents of writers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss and designer Gabriella Slade, respectively. Chloe Tucker Caine, who made her Broadway debut coinciding with the 2,000th performance, is joined by fellow performers Atkinson and Paris, both of whom have strong ties to the musical’s early iterations in the UK. Atkinson, in particular, has been involved since its inception at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked on the honour of being part of such an impactful project with a storied legacy.
Wilcoxon, who transitioned from the touring company to Broadway, spoke about the show’s unique perspective. “‘SIX’ serves as a powerful reminder that women’s stories are significant and deserve to be told,” she commented. Donalson, also a former tour performer, highlighted the production’s allure, crediting its longevity to the varying interpretations each cast brings to the iconic roles.
The musical’s success extends beyond its Broadway run, having released a popular cast album. ‘SIX: Live on Opening Night’ not only topped Billboard’s cast album chart but also received a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album. Collectively, the cast recordings have amassed over 5.5 billion streams, showcasing the show’s vast reach and appeal.
Despite the impending conclusion of its Broadway chapter, ‘SIX’ is set to continue captivating audiences worldwide. The production remains active in London’s West End and is on tour in both the UK and Australia. Furthermore, the U.S. national tour is set to resume on 25 October in Baltimore, with additional productions planned across various countries including a forthcoming return tour in China and a new Spanish-language version launching in Madrid.
