In an endearing twist of fate, a construction crew in Barberton, Ohio, welcomed an unexpected new member after rescuing a kitten trapped within an excavator. The heartwarming story began when Chase Guello, Operating Supervisor at River Reach Construction, discovered the small tan and white kitten while taking a routine equipment check at a job site in Leavittsburg. The incident, which occurred earlier this month, has since captured the attention of internet users, turning the kitten into a social media sensation.

Guello was alerted to the kitten’s plight by its persistent mewing. In a video shared on Instagram, he can be heard stating, “Rescue mission for the day. Normally, it’s a piece of equipment. Right now, it’s this little guy. There’s a cat.” The video documents the crew’s efforts to free the trapped animal by removing the skid plate from the excavator. On July 14, the rescue operation ended successfully, with Guello pulling the frightened yet adorable creature from its confines.

After checking the immediate area for the kitten’s mother and siblings with no success, the crew concluded that the little one was alone and needed a safe place to stay. They decided to take her home rather than leave her to fend for herself. It was determined that she would be adopted by one of the crew members who had the experience necessary to care for her properly.

Guello shared the details of the kitten’s new home with local media, explaining that a friend of his mother works at One of a Kind Pets, a pet adoption and rescue centre in Akron. This friend has extensive experience in fostering kittens and agreed to look after the young feline for two to three weeks until she is old enough to transition to a more permanent home. “Her new guardian will be Jared, our shop mechanic, who grew up on a farm and has plenty of experience with animals,” Guello stated. He added that the kitten would accompany Jared daily between the workshop and his home.
In an adorable nod to the circumstances of her rescue, the kitten has been named Sue, inspired by the Komatsu machinery in which she was found. Guello remarked on the nature of the incident, suggesting it challenges the stereotype of the rugged construction workers who are often perceived as insensitive. He expressed, “I think it’s such a feel-good story that, you know, traditionally, like blue-collar – we’re rough around the edges, we don’t have feelings. But we still care for such a little kitten.”
The viral sensation generated by the rescue and the subsequent updates about the kitten’s life garnered attention from Komatsu, the manufacturer of the excavator, who reached out to the team. In a heartwarming gesture, they sent Sue a miniature hard hat and construction vest, allowing her to join the ranks of the crew who saved her. The whimsical gesture underscored the community spirit that often arises in unexpected situations.
Social media users have responded positively to the story, with many expressing their delight and affection for Sue. The original Instagram posts depicting her rescue have garnered thousands of views and comments, reflecting a communal celebration of compassion and care for animals in distress.
Local residents have also expressed appreciation for the crew’s actions, praising them for their kindness in taking care of the vulnerable creature. This incident has reignited discussions about the responsibility of individuals and communities to consider the well-being of animals, especially those that find themselves in precarious situations.
As Sue settles into her new life, the River Reach Construction crew remains committed to giving her a loving and secure environment. The story of her rescue has not only highlighted the crew’s dedication but also illustrated how simple acts of kindness can change lives. In an era where uplifting stories can often be overshadowed by negativity, Sue’s adventure serves as a reminder that compassion knows no bounds.
