A 20-year-old man from Morgantown, West Virginia, has been arrested on charges related to the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material. Garrett Michael Highlander was apprehended on August 21, following the execution of a search warrant by the West Virginia State Police at his home. Investigators uncovered disturbing evidence suggesting Highlander was involved in online activities centred around explicit content involving minors.

The investigation into Highlander’s activities was initiated after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children submitted 48 cybertip reports regarding a user on the popular communication platform Discord. This account was allegedly linked to Highlander, who reportedly boasted about having a “large cache” of such explicit material, displaying alarming behaviour indicative of a predatory nature.
Highlander had been using various usernames on Discord, including “MrChildPorn” and “MrToxix”, while engaging in conversations that suggested a troubling focus on explicit content related to infants. Reports indicate that he directly communicated with other users, disseminating abusive material and asking whether they were open to trading such images.
During the investigation, authorities discovered conversations in which Highlander manipulated Discord’s artificial intelligence features to locate explicit images of infants. When questioned about his conduct, Highlander claimed his comments were intended as trolling or “rage baiting,” asserting that he found the reactions of others “highly amusing.” He further disclosed that he had participated in chat servers where young people, particularly girls, were groomed or encouraged to inflict self-harm, although he denied his involvement in such actions.
The search conducted by law enforcement reportedly uncovered multiple explicit images on Highlander’s phone, including a distressing 32-second video of a girl believed to be between 15 and 17 years old. This disturbing footage allegedly depicted the minor in a vulnerable state, with visible injuries on her arms and legs.
Highlander now faces serious legal repercussions under West Virginia law, with charges of possession of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The legal framework categorises these charges based on the volume of material; Highlander’s case involves more than 50 but fewer than 300 images. According to the law, a video lasting under five minutes can be classified as equivalent to 100 images.
As of the latest reports, Garrett Michael Highlander is being held at North Central Regional Jail, with bail set at $100,000.
