Uhler’s journey into the world of pageantry began nearly five years ago when she decided to pursue her long-held dream of competing in a beauty pageant. This aspiration came at a challenging time in her life; she weighed nearly 300 lbs and faced health concerns that were alarming enough to prompt a serious reassessment of her lifestyle. During a doctor’s appointment, she received a stark warning about her health, being labelled “morbidly obese” and warned that she was on a dangerous path.
“It was a wakeup call I truly needed,” Uhler reflected on that pivotal moment. The stark reality of her health situation was further underscored by an embarrassing incident at a trampoline park with her children, when she found herself stuck in a foam pit and needed assistance to be freed. “I realised I was living a half-life,” she explained. “I wasn’t even able to walk up the stairs in my own home.” Motivated by these experiences, she set a goal to enter a beauty pageant.
Initially, the thought of losing 170 lbs felt daunting to Uhler, akin to “climbing Mount Everest,” so she shifted her focus towards achieving better health. She emphasised the importance of “choosing your hard” in her journey, ultimately defining her personal challenge as preparing for a pageant. Uhler committed to a rigorous regimen of dieting and exercising over the next three and a half years, leading to a successful transformation. Her efforts culminated in her winning the title of Mrs. Florida Universe, and subsequently competing for the Mrs. Universe crown.
However, it has always been the Miss USA pageant that captivated Uhler’s imagination. In July, she was appointed as Miss Michigan USA 2026 after an open casting call, realising her dream of competing at Miss USA. “I know, I’m crazy,” Uhler remarked with a laugh, reflecting on the prospect of appearing in a bikini on television after her remarkable weight loss journey.
For Uhler, participating in this pageant is not just about challenging conventional beauty standards. It represents an opportunity to embrace life fully after feeling inhibited by her previous weight. “I felt like I was living a half-life,” she reiterated, emphasising the shift in her mindset regarding health and self-image.
Now in Miami, where the Miss USA contest will take place, Uhler has been energised by the support she has received from fellow contestants. Contrary to her expectations of feeling insecure among younger participants, she has found them to be incredibly encouraging. “The younger contestants have been so supportive of me,” she said, adding that even the teen competitors have rallied around her.
Uhler believes that her age and life experiences are assets that set her apart from her peers. “I’ve lived the lives of the younger contestants twice over,” she said. With a newfound sense of confidence, she feels prepared to take on the challenge of being not only the oldest contestant but possibly the first mother to claim the title.
Moving beyond traditional conceptions of beauty, Uhler sees Miss USA as a platform that embodies more than physical appearance. “It’s so much more than skin deep,” she noted. “When you get here to the top 51, everyone’s beautiful. It’s about what else you bring to the table.” As the event draws nearer, she expresses excitement about the camaraderie she has found within this community.
Uhler envisions a long-term relationship with the pageant, wanting to come back as a mentor and continue supporting future contestants. “You’ll see me every year,” she asserted, sharing her enthusiasm for being part of a sisterhood that she had always dreamt of joining.
