Cheri Oteri, the former Saturday Night Live star, has recently shared her journey with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), following her diagnosis earlier this year. The 63-year-old actress completed her treatment in August and is now advocating for breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection.

After her diagnosis in February, Oteri relied on the support of her close friend, actress Camryn Manheim, known for her roles in *Law & Order* and *The Practice*. Oteri describes Manheim as “my well-adjusted friend,” highlighting the comfort she found in their conversations. When Oteri learned that a mastectomy was recommended, she felt uncertain about this course of action.

“My instincts said that this drastic measure may not be necessary,” Oteri reflected. With her apprehensions in mind, she reached out to Manheim, who encouraged her to seek a second opinion. “Camryn is the epitome of a second-opinion advocate,” Oteri remarked, acknowledging that she was initially hesitant to pursue further medical advice.
Following Manheim’s suggestion, Oteri consulted another doctor who offered an alternative treatment plan consisting of a lumpectomy followed by radiation. “I felt empowered after doing my research,” Oteri stated, expressing relief and gratitude for the second opinion that led her to a less aggressive treatment.
Oteri described her experience with treatment as surprisingly manageable. After the lumpectomy, she was astonished at how well she felt. “I was completely blindsided by the lack of pain,” she admitted. The routine pain medication prescribed was never needed, marking a stark contrast to her expectations of recovery.
In August, Oteri celebrated the conclusion of her treatment with a traditional ceremony—in this case, ringing the bell that signifies the end of radiation therapy. Initially hesitant about sharing her experience publicly, she questioned her right to celebrate her milestone. “I almost felt undeserving because my journey wasn’t filled with severe hardship,” she confided.
Manheim, understanding her friend’s turmoil, provided candid counsel. “Why are you comparing your suffering to anyone else’s? Everybody suffers to different degrees. And you had a win,” Oteri recounted, capturing Manheim’s empowering words. With this encouragement, Oteri decided to share her celebratory moment on Instagram, furthering her message of resilience and hope.
To her surprise, sharing her video resonated with many, including her cousin who reached out shortly after viewing it, sharing her own recent diagnosis of DCIS. Oteri reassured her cousin, conveying confidence and offering support during a challenging time. “If there’s any breast cancer you have to have, this is it,” she remarked, underlining a tone of hope amid distress.
Reflecting on her experience, Oteri has been inspired to raise awareness about breast cancer, particularly among women. She expressed disbelief at the number of women affected by the disease. “So many women are suffering,” she said. Her advice to women is straightforward: “Get your mammograms. Don’t skip a year!”
Now engaged in the filming of *Grown Ups 3*, Oteri continues to use her platform to inform and encourage others facing breast cancer. Her story serves as a reminder of the vital importance of second opinions and the power of support in navigating difficult health challenges. With her poignant message, Oteri is hopeful that she can help others understand their options and the importance of early detection in combating this prevalent illness.
