The search for a woman missing in the Delaware River in Delran, New Jersey, has entered its second day following her heroic attempt to save a young girl from drowning. The incident unfolded on Monday, August 24, at Amico Island Park, where the woman jumped into the water just before 4:00 p.m. after seeing the girl in distress.

Witnesses reported that the woman successfully pushed the child towards the shore, enabling nearby bystanders to pull her to safety. However, in a tragic turn of events, the rescuer went under the water and did not resurface, prompting immediate concern from those present. Delran Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin Peak stated, “The witnesses said they saw her go under and not resurface.” He also mentioned that the woman’s family had not heard from her since the incident.

Responding to the distress call, police officers arrived at the scene to find that the search for the missing woman was already underway. First responders were quickly mobilised, and efforts to locate her began almost immediately. Unfortunately, as darkness fell, teams had to temporarily suspend their search.

According to the Delran Police Department, various rescue teams, involving seven different agencies, have been working tirelessly to locate the missing woman. Reports indicate that rescuers have been scouring the rocky shoreline of the river, taking into account the challenging conditions posed by the area’s strong undercurrents.

Officials have stressed that swimming is prohibited in the waters surrounding Amico Island, as stated by the Burlington County Board of Commissioners. The presence of perilous currents makes the local rivers particularly dangerous, highlighting the risks involved in the incident.

The search resumed at dawn on Tuesday, August 25, as teams returned to the river in hopes of finding the missing woman. By mid-morning, the search was still active, with a spokesperson for the Delran Police Department confirming that there had been no updates regarding her whereabouts. Authorities have not disclosed whether there is any familial connection between the rescuer and the child she saved.

As rescue efforts continue, Amico Island Park has been closed to the public to facilitate the ongoing search operation. Delran police issued an alert to announce the closure, urging visitors to respect the situation and refrain from accessing the area until further notice.
