Alex Reddington, a 27-year-old diagnosed with breast cancer, is opening up about her experiences following treatment. Having initially assumed the lump she felt in her chest was merely a muscle knot, Reddington now shares the pivotal moments that led her to confront a life-changing diagnosis.

Her journey began in March 2025, when she was actively training as a lifelong swimmer for an open-water 10K event. After discovering the lump, she remembered seeing a poster for the Change and Check Campaign, which promotes breast cancer awareness. Despite reassurances from her doctor that the lump was likely benign, she insisted on further evaluation, resulting in an appointment with a breast nurse roughly two and a half weeks later.

Initially, the nurse, like her doctor, downplayed the lump, stating it was “probably nothing” since Reddington was young and had no family history of cancer. Nevertheless, a mammogram was ordered, which ultimately contradicted their initial assessment. Following a biopsy, Reddington received the devastating news of a diagnosis of grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma that had spread to her lymph nodes.
Once diagnosed, Reddington’s life transformed almost overnight. “My calendar filled up very, very quickly,” she reflected, as she moved swiftly to freeze her eggs before starting aggressive treatment. Following a double mastectomy and a rigorous regimen of chemotherapy, she underwent a total of 16 rounds, concluding with radiation treatment in April 2026. Fortunately, Reddington has since entered remission, although she continues to manage side effects and hormone treatments.
The physical toll of the treatments was immense, with Reddington admitting that the physical fatigue was one of the most challenging parts of her recovery. “Mentally, it was surprisingly easier,” she noted, attributing some of her resilience to the adrenaline of consistent medical appointments. However, the emotional toll surfaced significantly after her double mastectomy. She described a period of heightened anxiety and paranoia, leading to a reliance on antidepressants to help manage her mental health.
As she now navigates life post-treatment, Reddington faces ongoing challenges. She acknowledges that while she’s technically in remission, the experience has left a profound impact on her life and perception of the future. Friends and family may view her completed treatment as a return to normalcy, yet she carries with her the weight of her medical history. “It’s hard to move on upwards and forwards,” she expressed, as she grapples with fears of relapse and feelings of isolation from missed experiences during her treatment.
Moreover, the prospect of re-entering the social sphere after treatment poses its own difficulties. Reddington notes that she has missed important milestones, such as weddings and holidays, while focusing on her health. Now, as she prepares to reconnect with the world, she feels an added pressure to “catch up” on life, all while balancing the ongoing considerations brought on by her diagnosis.
In the aftermath of her illness, Reddington struggles with adjusting to the physical changes her body has undergone. Once an athlete in peak condition, she describes feeling her weakest now, which complicates her desire to return to pre-cancer activities. “It’s mentally exhausting—just wanting something and wanting to be normal in your body, but it’s just not agreeing,” she lamented.
Reddington has begun to share her story through social media platforms in hopes of encouraging advocacy for breast cancer awareness, especially among younger women who might overlook their health concerns. “A lot of younger women can be misdiagnosed or not diagnosed because of their age,” she admonished, emphasizing the importance of persistence in seeking answers from medical professionals.
As Reddington continues on her path of recovery, she remains focused on rebuilding her life and harnessing her experiences to help others. While the road ahead is fraught with new challenges, her story serves as an important reminder of the need for vigilance in one’s health and the power of self-advocacy in navigating the complexities of medical challenges.
