In a distressing turn of events, a woman from Toledo, Ohio, has found herself in desperate circumstances after being deceived by a scammer posing as a representative of a local deaf services organisation. Deborah Huber, who lives with disabilities and is deaf, is now facing homelessness after giving away her life savings of £12,000 to someone she believed would help her secure stable housing for herself and her son.

At the start of the year, Huber received a message via Facebook from an individual claiming to be an employee of the Deaf Services Centre in her area. This person offered assistance in relocating Huber and her adult son into a fully furnished home, leading her to believe she would soon have a new place to live. Trusting the scammer, Huber transferred her total savings of £12,000 to the individual, only to discover later that the promised support was nothing more than an elaborate ruse.
“I thought they were going to buy me a house and furniture, and I found out that wasn’t true,” Huber recounted in an interview. The harsh reality set in when she realised she could no longer afford her rent and utilities, ultimately leading to her eviction from her current residence. “I lost everything,” Huber lamented, expressing the gravity of her situation.
According to reports from Toledo Municipal Court officials, the eviction was executed on August 13. A court representative stated, “Evictions are hard on everyone involved. Our civil bailiffs carry out these court orders with respect for the law and compassion for the people affected.” In this instance, the officers even assisted Huber in searching for emergency housing and coordinated with the Humane Society to look after her dogs during this challenging time.
On the day of her eviction, footage captured Huber standing outside her former home, pushing a shopping cart filled with her belongings while clutching one of her dogs, a service animal, in her arms. Unfortunately, Huber’s remaining four dogs were taken to the Toledo Humane Society for safekeeping, leaving her in a further state of distress.
Currently, Huber and her service dog are temporarily residing with a family friend, while her son, Chris, has managed to secure temporary accommodation through the Lucas County Board. Family friend Stephanie Coates expressed the difficulty the family faces, explaining that losing their savings has significantly impacted their ability to find stable housing. “So finding a place for them is pretty hard right now,” Coates noted, emphasising the urgency of their situation.
The Toledo Police Department has confirmed that an investigation into the fraudulent activities is ongoing. A spokesperson highlighted the challenges involved in recovering financial losses resulting from scams like the one that affected Huber. “We urge the public to be cautious of unsolicited offers, especially when they seem too good to be true,” the spokesperson advised, reiterating the importance of verifying claims with proper organisations prior to taking action.
In response to Huber’s plight, a family friend has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with her housing needs. On the fundraising page, they urged potential donors to consider the impact of Huber’s situation. “Imagine losing everything you have worked for — not because you gave up, but because someone took advantage of your trust,” the friend wrote, articulating the family’s desperate need for help.
The GoFundMe appeal notes that Huber and Chris are not seeking extravagant contributions; rather, they simply require a safe place to live and an opportunity to rebuild their lives. “Any donation, no matter how small, can make a difference,” the friend continued, calling for collective support to ensure Huber and her son have a stable home to call their own once more.
As Huber navigates this challenging chapter in her life, the community’s support could play an essential role in providing her and her son with the security they urgently need. The ongoing investigation and the family’s fundraising efforts highlight the ongoing societal issue of fraud and the significant consequences it can have on individuals and families.
