**E. coli and Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Alfalfa Sprouts: FDA Issues Urgent Warning**

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a stern warning concerning alfalfa sprouts linked to a considerable outbreak of E. coli and Salmonella across 15 states. This health alert comes as health authorities investigate illnesses that have afflicted 55 individuals, prompting a joint effort between the FDA, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and various state and local health departments.

The outbreak is primarily associated with alfalfa sprouts distributed by Everything Sprouts, LLC, which markets its products under the brands Calco and Everything Sprouts. Officials have advised consumers to refrain from consuming, selling, or serving these sprouts due to safety concerns.

The illnesses have been reported between May 31 and August 8, with reported cases spanning across numerous states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York, among others. The situation has been severe enough to result in hospitalisation for four of the affected individuals. The FDA has indicated that there are multiple strains of E. coli involved in the outbreak, along with a strain of Salmonella, and some patients have displayed symptoms of both infections.

In Wisconsin alone, 17 confirmed cases are linked to the outbreak, with one individual hospitalised. Meanwhile, neighbouring Minnesota has reported 23 cases, highlighting the significant geographical spread of the contamination.

In their investigation, the FDA utilised traceback data obtained from both grocery stores and restaurants to trace back to the source of the infections. Given the findings, the agency expressed concern that the alfalfa sprouts may be contaminated by several pathogens. An inspection of Everything Sprouts was initiated on August 19, coinciding with the collection of samples for further analysis.

In light of this public health threat, the FDA has strongly advised consumers to dispose of any alfalfa sprouts from Everything Sprouts that they may have at home. Those who purchased these products are also encouraged to return them to the retailer for a refund and are urged to thoroughly sanitise any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated sprouts.

The FDA has underscored the seriousness of the illness, noting that the symptoms related to E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. There is particular concern that such infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening condition characterised by acute kidney failure. Additionally, E. coli infections can result in chronic kidney conditions and neurological complications.

For Salmonella infections, common symptoms encompass diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever. The agency has highlighted that vulnerable populations—such as those with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly—are at heightened risk for severe illness.

Those who have consumed Alfalfa sprouts from the Calco or Everything Sprouts brands and are beginning to experience related symptoms are advised to promptly reach out to healthcare providers for medical guidance. The FDA continues to monitor the unfolding situation closely and is actively working with Everything Sprouts on the issue, recommending that the company carry out a product recall to mitigate risks to public health.
