In a complex case that has captured national attention, Karmelo Anthony, a 19-year-old, is currently appealing his 35-year prison sentence for the murder of Austin Metcalf. Anthony was convicted in June for the fatal stabbing of Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, in 2025. These recent hearings, taking place this week, have raised significant questions regarding an informal “gentlemen’s agreement” that previously excluded potentially damaging information from the trial. This agreement was made by both the prosecution and defence to maintain focus solely on the events surrounding the moment of the stabbing.

As the appeal proceedings continued, the court heard testimony from the prosecution regarding Anthony’s behaviour leading up to the incident. According to prosecutor Bill Wirskye, just hours before the stabbing, Anthony’s former girlfriend had reported to school officials that he was engaging in stalking behaviour and refusing to accept the end of their relationship. Furthermore, Wirskye revealed that Anthony had texted his ex-girlfriend indicating he was “lowk on the verge,” suggesting an unsettling state of mind.

In a shocking claim made during the hearings, the prosecution disclosed Anthony’s alleged obsession with knives. It was reported that he had sent messages to his girlfriend expressing his intentions to “lick blood off of his knife,” further highlighting concerns about his mental state at the time of the murder.

Conversely, information that could have cast a shadow over Metcalf’s character was also kept from the jury due to the aforementioned agreement. Defence attorney Mike Howard presented an offence report indicating that Metcalf had been responsible for spray-painting offensive and racist graffiti. Wirskye reported an “unprecedented” surge in threats aimed at those connected to the case, detailing instances where the families were subjected to extremely dangerous situations, including one occasion wherein Metcalf’s family was “swatted.”

The courthouse environment has also been affected severely; staff members have undergone training to handle bomb threats, as a result of mounting security concerns surrounding the trial. This atmosphere of fear and heightened racial tension further complicates the narrative surrounding the case.
