Sterling K. Brown Gives Update on Mom’s ALS Journey, Which He Says Has Shared Striking Similarities with His “This Is Us” Storyline

Sterling K. Brown, the acclaimed actor known for his role in the television series “This Is Us,” recently opened up about the deeply personal parallels he has experienced between his life and the show’s narrative. Brown’s mother, Aralean, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2018. “You still have to recenter yourself on doing what she thinks is best for herself,” Brown explained, highlighting the importance of patience in their communication efforts. Aralean became a guardian to his younger brother Robert amidst the struggles of Robert’s birth mother, and later, took on the care of twin sisters Ariel and Avery. Tragically, the family endured the heartbreak of losing Avery to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), yet Aralean’s resilience saw them through those difficult times, culminating in the formal adoption of Robert and Ariel.

“My mother truly is an extraordinary human being,” Brown asserted, appreciating her strength and character. As his mother continues to live with ALS, he noted that she has surpassed the expectations set by medical professionals regarding her lifespan. Despite her illness, he described her capacity for joy, which shines brightly even in the face of adversity.

Brown marvelled at the “radiance” his mother maintains, stating that her ability to engage warmly with others has been a source of inspiration for him. He acknowledged that her approach to life’s challenges has instilled in him a valuable lesson about agency. “I don’t have to allow circumstances to dictate how I am in the world,” he articulated, asserting that while one may not have control over their circumstances, the way they respond to them remains a personal choice.
