A woman from Missouri, Saybra Martin, has been charged with child abuse and neglect following allegations of confining her four-year-old stepson in a filthy closet. The report describes the closet as having a foul odour of urine and containing a portable toilet along with couch cushions that were surrounded by flies. Law enforcement officials with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after a social services worker discovered the boy on 15 August at a residence in Carthage.

According to a probable cause affidavit, when deputies arrived, they found the child confined in the closet for roughly three hours. Martin reportedly explained her actions, stating that the confinement was a result of the boy’s behavioural issues, specifically instances of hitting his siblings.
During a subsequent forensic interview, the child recounted instances of being spanked by Martin both with her hand and a light brown paddle. The boy’s account indicated that he had experienced pain from the spankings while fully clothed and also on his bare skin. In a troubling revelation, he mentioned being struck on the head by a Gatorade bottle tossed in his direction by Martin, which he claimed caused him to cry.
The details of the case were corroborated when a nurse practitioner examined the boy and identified significant bruises on his buttocks. The medical professional also noted bruising on the boy’s face, indicative of someone forcefully grabbing him. Martin later admitted to law enforcement that she had spanked the child but insisted that she only did so four times. She also admitted to throwing the Gatorade bottle, insisting that it had unintentionally hit the child after bouncing off a wall, and acknowledged grabbing him by the face to ensure he was paying attention while she spoke.
The conditions of the home where the boy was discovered were described as “extremely unsanitary.” Deputies reported finding rubbish both inside and outside the property and noted a strong foul smell permeating the area. In addition to the unclean living environment, evidence of cockroach activity and spoiled food left on the kitchen floor was also observed.
The case reflects a broader concern regarding the welfare of children in the household. Alongside the four-year-old boy, three other children, aged between 10 months and 11 years, were removed from the home for their safety. Alarmingly, Martin is also facing charges related to a previous incident in 2026 involving a four-year-old girl, whom she allegedly spanked multiple times on the bare skin with a wooden spoon, resulting in severe bruising.
