Emergency services received alerts around 2:40 p.m. regarding four individuals encountering difficulties in the sea. A multi-agency response was swiftly mobilised, involving His Majesty’s Coastguard and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Chief Superintendent James Collis of Sussex Police reported that all four individuals were successfully retrieved from the water.

Tragically, despite the prompt arrival of paramedics, three victims—a male adult, a female adult, and a teenage girl—were pronounced dead at the scene. A younger girl from the same family was transported to hospital, where she is currently in a critical condition.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identities of those who lost their lives. They have informed the victims’ relatives and are providing support through specially trained officers during this harrowing time. Chief Superintendent Collis shared with the press that the family had entered the water together and appear to have gotten into distress shortly after.
“Inquiries are currently ongoing to establish the precise circumstances leading to this tragedy,” Collis explained. “At this time, we understand that all four individuals entered the water from the shore to swim, and sadly, they encountered difficulties.”
The Coastguard authorities conducted a rigorous search of the surrounding waters and confirmed that they are not looking for any other missing persons.
Local witnesses reported the scene as chaotic, with numerous emergency services converging on the beach. Eyewitnesses recounted seeing helicopters, ambulances, police vehicles, and coastguard crews as they rushed to give assistance. Fiona Stephens and Jen Ashworth, who manage a nearby bar, expressed the shock felt by the local community. Ashworth remarked, “It’s an absolute tragedy for their family, it’s horrendous,” while Stephens added her disbelief at the devastating turn of events.
As the community comes to grips with the loss, Sussex Police have urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses video footage that could assist in the investigation to come forward.
In a statement to the media, Sussex Police confirmed that they were not able to provide additional updates at that time but reiterated their commitment to understanding the circumstances surrounding this heart-wrenching event.
While the beach typically attracts visitors for its scenic views and recreational opportunities, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by unpredictable sea conditions. Emergency services remind the public to always exercise caution when swimming in open waters and to pay attention to safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
As the investigation continues, the local community stands in solidarity with the affected family, grappling with the aftermath of this tragic affair.
