The iconic television show *Soul Train*, which premiered in 1970, is remembered as a groundbreaking platform that celebrated Black music, dance, fashion, and culture. Created by the legendary Don Cornelius, it began its journey as a local programme in Chicago before evolving into a nationally syndicated phenomenon the following year. For 35 years, *Soul Train* earned the moniker “the hippest trip in America,” and its legacy includes showcases for some of music’s most influential figures, from James Brown to Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye.
Don Cornelius, the show’s original host, became a household name with his deep, smooth voice and signature sign-off: “I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace, and soul!” Even after stepping down in 1993, the host remained a crucial presence behind the scenes. Mystro Clark, who succeeded him as the first permanent replacement, noted Cornelius’s dedication, stating that he continued to attend every taping to oversee production decisions.
Cornelius’s devotion to *Soul Train* was unwavering throughout its duration. After selling the rights to the *Soul Train* library in 2008, he shared reflective insights about the show’s beginnings in a rare interview for a VH1 documentary in 2010. Unfortunately, his life ended tragically on February 1, 2012, as he succumbed to suicide at the age of 75, battling health issues for years. He left behind his two sons, Anthony and Raymond, and a complex personal life that included a strained marriage with Russian model Viktoria Chapman.
Reflecting on his impact within the music industry, Cornelius was posthumously honoured in 2023 with an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, receiving the prestigious Ahmet Ertegun Award that recognises influential music industry figures behind the scenes.
Following Cornelius, Mystro Clark marked his entry as the first permanent host in 1997, a role he cherished. Having previously guest-hosted an episode, Clark’s rapport with guests brought a fresh approach. His hosting tenure lasted until 1999. Clark took pride in being handpicked by Cornelius for the role and considers it a significant achievement in his career.
After *Soul Train*, Clark continued to forge his path in the entertainment industry, wearing multiple hats as an actor, comedian, and writer. He hosted the travel series *Awesome Adventures* from 1998 to 2012, while also writing for Nickelodeon and developing projects for major studios like Disney and Warner Bros. Today, he remains active in stand-up comedy and motivational speaking, hinting at upcoming projects, including a podcast.
Another prominent host, Shemar Moore, entered the *Soul Train* spotlight at the turn of the millennium, hosting from 2000 to 2003. Having already gained fame as Malcolm Winters on *The Young and the Restless*, Moore’s role on *Soul Train* was just one aspect of a flourishing career. Following his departure, he became well-known for his portrayal of FBI agent Derek Morgan on *Criminal Minds*. He later took a leading role in the action-packed series *S.W.A.T.*, which ran for eight seasons and concluded in May 2025.
Moore is not only a talented actor but also an entrepreneur. He launched the Baby Girl clothing line in 2013, inspired by his character’s affectionate nickname on *Criminal Minds*. A portion of the proceeds from this venture benefits the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a cause close to him due to his mother’s battle with the disease. Recently, Moore reprised his role as Malcolm Winters in *The Young and the Restless* and continues to work on a new *S.W.A.T.* spinoff set to premiere soon.
Lastly, Dorian Gregory completed the roster of *Soul Train* hosts, taking the reins from Moore in 2003 until the series concluded in 2006. He first guest-hosted the show in 1996, describing the experience as magical. Gregory was also known for playing police inspector Darryl Morris on the hit series *Charmed*. After *Soul Train*, he appeared in various popular TV shows, such as *Grey’s Anatomy* and *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.*
Presently, Gregory is working on a collection of poetry and short stories, titled *The Listen INN*, showcasing his creative pursuits beyond acting.
