Livestreamed School Shooting Leaves 2 Students Dead, Including Suspected Attacker

A tragic incident unfolded in Zamboanga City, Philippines, on the morning of Tuesday, August 18, resulting in the deaths of two students during a school shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The shocking event occurred around 7:50 a.m. local time when an alleged ninth-grade student reportedly opened fire on his classmates while livestreaming the act on the internet.

According to the Philippine National Police, the suspected shooter carried both a pistol and a rifle onto the school premises. Eyewitness footage showed him entering a classroom, discharging his weapon, changing guns, and then targeting another classroom. Disturbing images emerged, including one depicting a victim lying on the ground following the gunfire.

Initial reports suggest that in addition to the fatalities, several other students sustained injuries during the incident, with local media reporting that as many as nine individuals could be affected. The Philippine National Police have yet to disclose the identities of the deceased students.

Authorities are currently examining how the weapons utilised in the attack were smuggled onto the school grounds. Reports indicate that the firearm was a .40-caliber pistol, which was issued to the alleged shooter’s father, a former customs official. Furthermore, it has been claimed that the rifle used in the attack also belonged to the same individual.

The director of the regional police department, Dennis A. Esguerra, stated that the Philippine National Police is collaborating closely with both the school administration and the local community to investigate the incident thoroughly. He affirmed the commitment to determining the facts of the case, ensuring accountability, and enhancing safety measures to protect students and staff.

In response to the tragic event, the President of Zamboanga University, Ernald Andal, expressed profound condolences to the families of victims. He announced the cancellation of classes on Tuesday and declared Wednesday, August 19, as a day of mourning, allowing the school community to come together in grief.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also extended his sympathies, condemning the shooting and affirming that a comprehensive investigation would be initiated. In a statement, he lamented the tragedy and emphasised the expectation that schools should be sanctuaries for children, where they can learn and grow without fear of violence.

While school shootings are infrequent in the Philippines, this incident marks the second occurrence within a two-month period, following a shooting on June 22 in Tacloban City, which resulted in the deaths of three students and injuries to others.

The Philippine National Police has called for restraint, urging members of the public not to share unverified information or videos related to the incident in an effort to maintain order and respect for the victims’ families.

As investigations continue into this heart-wrenching event, the Ateneo de Zamboanga community and the wider public are left grappling with the implications of violence in educational settings.
