**Troy Iwata Joins Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody**

In an exciting development for theatre enthusiasts, comedian and actor Troy Iwata is set to take on the role of Shane Hollander in the Off-Broadway musical parody *Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody* beginning on 31 August. The show, which offers a humorous twist on a popular hockey romance, will see Iwata perform alongside Jay Armstrong Johnson, who portrays Shane’s Russian rival-turned-lover, Ilya Rozanov.

Iwata will step into the character made famous by Aaron Alcaraz, who performs his final show the day prior, on 30 August. The transition highlights Iwata’s return to the New York stage, where he has previously made notable appearances in both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, including *Be More Chill* as well as standout roles in *Shrek the Musical*, *La Cage aux Folles*, and *Waitress*.

In anticipation of his opening night, Iwata has embraced the spirit of the musical, recently sharing promotional photos that depict him shirtless while wielding a hockey stick and donning red gloves. The vibrant portrayal is indicative of the playful and energetic tone expected from this unique production.

*Heated Rivalry*, written by Dylan MarcAurele and directed by Alan Kliffer, is inspired by the HBO Max adaptation of Rachel Reid’s bestselling hockey romance novel published in 2019. The story focuses on the tumultuous relationship between professional hockey players Shane and Ilya, whose competitive rivalry cleverly conceals a deeper, years-long romance. This theatrical interpretation promises to delve into the humorous elements of their saga, shedding the seriousness found in other adaptations.

The show initially commenced with a series of sold-out concert performances earlier this year and officially started its fully staged run in May. Following its success, *Heated Rivalry* has been extended twice and will now continue to entertain audiences at The Culture Club in New York City until 1 November.

Iwata’s casting further cements the popularity of the musical. His current role as a correspondent for Comedy Central’s *The Daily Show* has not overshadowed his passion for the theatre; indeed, he was recently recognised as one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” for 2024. In addition to his work on stage, Iwata has made appearances in various television projects, including Netflix’s *Too Much* and *The Perfect Couple*, as well as shows like *WeCrashed*, *Dash & Lily*, and *Ray Donovan*.

The television adaptation of Reid’s novel has generated considerable buzz and transformed the original narrative into something of a cultural phenomenon, launching the careers of Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie as the lead characters. However, the musical opts for a decidedly light-hearted approach to their story, promising an entertaining experience for audiences.

Highlights of the live show include a diverse and “bop-infused” original score, alongside intentional narrative twists and comical character moments. Audiences can expect to encounter eccentric figures such as “Rose Landry,” as well as the cheeky reference to “Ilya’s Ass,” embodying the irreverent spirit of the production.

Maintaining continuity, Jay Armstrong Johnson will remain in the role of Ilya, while a talented ensemble cast, including Ryann Redmond and Ryan Duncan, supports the production’s narrative. Notably, Cherry Torres, who currently plays a role in the production, will depart from the cast on 9 September, with Shelby Acosta stepping in for the role of Shane’s Mum and other characters starting the following day.

Additionally, fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a piece of the musical’s magic at home, as an original cast album is scheduled for release by Center Stage Records on 18 September and will include a selection of songs from the performance.
