A father from Iowa, diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, recently showcased incredible resilience by completing a local 5K race with the help of his sons. Dean Mallie, deeply fond of the Lisbon Sauerkraut Days 5K, expressed how much the event means to him, especially following his diagnosis two years ago.

Mallie shared his sentiments about the race, saying, “I can’t begin to think how many times I either trained for it or ran it. It’s just home.” Before his illness, he enjoyed a successful running career, participating in marathons and numerous other races alongside his sons. However, due to his condition, he could no longer compete in the same way.
Dustin Mallie, Dean’s son, remarked on the family’s determination, explaining, “He’s at this point [where he’s] not necessarily able to run it in the way that he used to. But we can still participate. We can still get him across the finish line.” With this mindset, Dustin, along with his brother, enabled their father to take part in the much-loved annual event.
The race team of Mallie and his sons completed the course in just under 50 minutes, but what was most poignant was the moment Dean crossed the finish line on his own, with support from his walker. As the crowd erupted in cheers, it was a testament to his spirit and the bond he shares with his family and community.
Outside of his personal journey, Dean has taken an active role in advocating for radon testing in homes. He believes this odourless and colourless gas, which can accumulate in residential properties, was a contributing factor to his lung cancer. Radon arises from the natural decay of radioactive elements present in the soil and rocks, and higher concentrations are often found in basements or near wells, making awareness crucial for public health.
The American Cancer Society identifies radon as the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, emphasizing the importance of awareness and testing. Since launching his advocacy efforts, Dean has seen considerable success; he noted, “We’ve gotten a lot of people tested, and then they have an opportunity, if it’s needed, to get it mitigated or determine what they want to do.”
Dean draws parallels between the necessity of raising awareness about radon and running a marathon. “We’ve called this a marathon,” he stated, reflecting on the challenges he has faced and the ongoing effort required to navigate his health journey.
