A cruise passenger has initiated legal proceedings against Royal Caribbean, claiming that a dislodged bathroom panel resulted in “life-altering” injuries, including trauma to her brain and spine. The incident reportedly took place aboard the Harmony of the Seas, a prominent cruise liner.

LeAnn Carpenter, a resident of New Braunfels, Texas, filed the lawsuit on 11 August at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The case arises from an event that allegedly occurred on 15 May 2025 while Carpenter was preparing to attend a performance onboard the ship.
According to the claims made in the lawsuit, Carpenter was using a restroom when an access panel situated behind the toilet inexplicably detached from the wall. The panel fell and struck her on the head, causing her to collapse to the floor. This incident not only caused immediate injury but also led to significant long-term health issues, according to Carpenter.

Following the incident, Carpenter alleges that she experienced a severe loss of consciousness and gaps in her memory. She was subsequently transported to the ship’s medical centre in a wheelchair for evaluation and treatment. The onboard physician advised her to seek further medical assessment at Cozumel International Hospital in Mexico, where she underwent CT scans of her head.
Carpenter claims that her diagnosis included a traumatic brain injury, accompanied by ongoing cognitive and psychological challenges. The lawsuit details symptoms such as memory loss, difficulty concentrating, struggles with language, anxiety, depressive tendencies, post-traumatic stress, fear of driving, diminished self-confidence, and an overall decline in her quality of life.
Additionally, Carpenter asserts that she suffered injuries to her cervical spine during this incident. The lawsuit levels three counts of negligence against Royal Caribbean and demands a jury trial, seeking compensation exceeding £75,000 for her injuries and suffering.
Spencer Aronfeld, Carpenter’s attorney, expressed strong sentiments regarding the situation, stating, “A cruise line should never expose a passenger to a danger like this.” He emphasised that Carpenter endured a serious head injury, necessitating urgent medical attention, and that she continues to grapple with the long-lasting effects of the incident. He further articulated that the lawsuit aims to uncover the circumstances leading to the incident and hold the cruise line accountable for ensuring passenger safety.
Aronfeld stressed that this case is not only about seeking justice for Carpenter but also about preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future. “We filed this lawsuit to find out how this panel was allowed to fall and to hold Royal Caribbean accountable for keeping its passengers safe,” he commented.
At the time of publication, attempts to secure a statement from Royal Caribbean regarding the allegations have not been successful. The cruise industry, particularly in light of growing consumer awareness about safety protocols, faces increasing scrutiny over passenger wellbeing.
As this case unfolds, it raises broader questions about the accountability of cruise lines, particularly in ensuring that their facilities are maintained to prevent hazards that could harm passengers. The implications of this lawsuit, both for the plaintiff and the industry, are significant as they bring attention to safety standards within the cruise sector.
The legal process will now determine whether Royal Caribbean will be held liable for the damages Carpenter alleges to have endured, as well as the potential consequences of this case for future cruise operations and passenger protections. The outcome could set a precedent impacting how cruise lines manage maintenance issues and respond to passenger safety concerns.
