A two-year-old boy from Florida, Alexander Petrilli, is currently being treated at Texas Children’s Hospital, where he requires a crucial combination of both a heart and double lung transplant due to complications stemming from a congenital heart condition known as transposition of the great arteries (TGA). This condition, which occurs when the two major arteries supplying blood to the body and lungs are switched, has led to a series of significant health challenges for Alexander since his birth in December 2021.

According to his mother, Kayla Petrilli, the struggles began early for Alexander, who has experienced recurrent heart failure since birth. “He’s been in and out of the hospital because he’s had heart failure this whole time, so any cold or any little bug he gets takes him down more than just a normal kid,” Kayla shared. She and her husband, Michael, recently turned to crowdfunding platform GoFundMe to help alleviate the mounting medical costs associated with their son’s care, which include not only medical bills but also expenses related to travel, food, and lodging during their time in Houston.

The family’s journey took a dire turn in December of last year when Alexander experienced a significant medical crisis. His father, Michael, recounted the alarming night when he was forced to perform CPR on his son after Alexander woke up in distress. “I gave him CPR at 4:45 a.m.,” Michael recalled, detailing the urgent situation that led to the emergency medical transfer to Texas.

Kayla provided further context on the emergency, describing a harrowing moment in which Alexander suddenly went limp and held his breath. “I grabbed him and started chest compressions in my arms while I ran across the house to wake Michael up,” she wrote on GoFundMe. This frantic scene culminated in a cardiac arrest due to a “pulmonary hypertension crisis,” necessitating immediate medical attention.

Upon arrival at Texas Children’s Hospital, Alexander was met with a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to his unique needs. Recently, the medical team implanted an external mechanical heart pump known as a Berlin Heart to support the function of the left side of his heart. This device is hoped to stabilise Alexander’s condition enough so that he can undergo the intensive treatments needed to address his pulmonary hypertension.

In a recent update, Kayla expressed her admiration for her son’s resilience, stating, “He is being so strong going through this. I can’t imagine how he feels being only 2 years old going through the unimaginable.” Their family is now in a race against time, hoping for a transplant that will grant Alexander a chance at a healthier future.
