Max Parkin discovered his 26-year-old son, Josh Thomson-Parkin, deceased at his job site following what appears to be a freak incident involving a wood chipper. Max Parkin recounted the painful moment he found Josh after his wife, Mekayla, raised the alarm when her husband failed to return home from work. Concerned that he had not arrived by 4:30 a.m. local time, she contacted Max, who decided to investigate. Disturbingly, he found Josh in the wood chipper, where he had apparently become trapped while trying to clear a blockage. “I found him in that machine,” Max shared, emotionally recounting the tragic scene. “It got clogged, and he was in the barrel cleaning it out and it fell on him… crushed him.”

The young carpenter had confided in his father just the night before about the issues he was facing with the wood chipper while employed at Mechanical Vegetation Solutions. “We had been discussing the machine that he died in,” Max recalled. “It was giving him a hard time that day. Adding to the concerns surrounding the incident, Dave Kirner, secretary of the Timber, Furnishing & Textiles Union (TFTU) in South Australia, indicated that members had raised significant safety issues regarding workers being left alone with dangerous equipment. “We actually emailed Mechanical Vegetation Solutions and let SafeWork SA know that these sites had problems with letting people work alone with dangerous equipment,” he stated, highlighting the potential dangers inherent in solitary work environments.
