Sheriff’s Attempt to Rescue Abandoned Llama on Colorado Trails Ends with a Happy Reunion

In a heartwarming incident recently reported by the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado, a wayward llama was rescued after being found tethered to a tree on the Comanche Peak Trail in the Roosevelt National Forest. Officers were dispatched on Friday, August 7, following reports from concerned hikers who suspected the animal had been abandoned.

Arriving at the scene, Deputy Maxwell and her equine partner, Deputy Dale, located the llama comfortably nestled in the woods, seemingly enjoying her surroundings. The sheriff’s office lightheartedly documented the encounter on their social media, noting, “Sure enough, deputies located the lounging lady chilling comfortably in a wooded area.”

The Comanche Peak Wilderness, with elevations ranging from 8,000 to 12,702 feet, is home to a variety of wildlife, including mountain lions and bears. Despite the potential dangers of the wilderness, the llama appeared unfazed by her surroundings. Initially, the deputies endeavoured to lead the llama back to safety, but quickly realised that she had other plans and was reluctant to budge.

Despite their efforts, the llama—who was described as being “not interested” in the idea of returning to civilization—stopped several times to rest during the lengthy return journey. After managing to coax her a mere thirty feet down the trail, the deputies found themselves facing a 45-minute delay as the llama settled in for a break, apparently determined to enjoy her impromptu outing.

As evening fell, Deputy Maxwell made the decision to let the llama rest, providing her with food and water, while planning to return the following morning. Upon their return, the deputies were relieved to find that the llama’s owners had arrived and explained that they had been checking on the animal while trying to lure her down the trail.

According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, the owners had left the llama hitched during a hike but had been unable to persuade her to leave the site. They expressed gratitude for the deputies’ assistance, having been pleasantly surprised by the progress made in leading their furry companion back.

The sheriff’s office also took the opportunity to remind pet owners to leave a note or notify law enforcement in similar situations, as they appreciated the initial report from the concerned hiker who had alerted them about the possible abandonment. In their social media post, they expressed their satisfaction that “our fluffy friend found her way home safely,” emphasising the importance of quick communication in ensuring the well-being of animals in outdoor settings.
