During her appearance on “The Jim Masters Show,” Mills, known for her previous work in soap operas, explained that although the show’s producers recognised her, they initially did not consider her for the role of Abby. Concerned about being pigeonholed into similar “goody-two-shoes” roles, she approached her agent seeking something different that would allow her to showcase her range as an actress.

“I went to my agent’s and said, ‘You’ve got to get me a different kind of role, not the same goody-two-shoes every time,'” Mills recalled. After expressing her enthusiasm for “Knots Landing,” she learned that producers were hesitant to audition her for Abby, believing she might lack the edge required for the character. “I knew they wouldn’t because they didn’t think that I had what it took to do Abby. I’d never had to show that before,” she added.
It was her agent who ultimately persuaded the show’s producers to allow Mills an audition. “Finally, my agent convinced them to let me come in and audition,” she stated, recalling how she left the audition hopeful yet uncertain about the outcome. To her surprise, Mills received a call just an hour later informing her that she had won the role.
Mills’ portrayal of Abby Cunningham became a defining feature of “Knots Landing,” contributing significantly to the show’s success. The character, known for her glamorous allure and ruthless ambition, captured the attention of viewers, thanks in part to her dramatic storylines and romantic entanglements.
Reflecting on her time on the show, Mills emphasised the chemistry she shared with her co-star, Ted Shackelford, who played Gary Ewing. Their complex relationship was a focal point for many story arcs and kept audiences captivated over the years. Mills described filming their passionate scenes as “fun,” and it is evident that their on-screen dynamic played a crucial role in the show’s appeal.
Looking back, Mills fondly remembers their camaraderie, saying, “I mean, look at Ted. I mean, really, get into bed with that body — and he’s such a sweetheart. He really is. It was, uh, it was fun. I can’t deny it. It was fun.” This playful acknowledgment of her experiences on set highlights how their performances contributed to the allure of the series.
“Knots Landing,” which aired from 1979 to 1993, is often remembered as a staple of classic American television, paving the way for future prime-time soaps. Mills’ character remains iconic, not only for her dramatic storylines but also for the evolution of female representation on television.
As Mills continues to reflect on her career, she remains grateful for the opportunities that roles like Abby Cunningham have afforded her. Her journey serves as an inspiring testament to the importance of resilience and advocacy in pursuing one’s dreams in the world of entertainment.
