Clea Shearer, co-founder of The Home Edit, has provided an inspiring update on her health and personal journey, following her diagnosis of stage 2 invasive mammary carcinoma in March 2022. Shearer, a well-known lifestyle entrepreneur, turned to social media to share her experience and to celebrate her progress after treatment.

The 44-year-old businesswoman discovered two small lumps in her right breast during a self-examination, prompting further medical investigation which led to her cancer diagnosis. In facing this aggressive form of breast cancer, Shearer underwent a series of treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, which resulted in significant physical changes, including the loss of her hair—a transformative experience she documented candidly on Instagram.
Recently, on August 13, Shearer joined a trending social media challenge to showcase the growth of her hair post-cancer treatment. She posted a series of photos featuring her chin-length grey-blonde bob, expressing her affection for her new look despite the attention her hair journey has garnered. “Kinda chic that so many people are fixated on my post-cancer hair,” she quipped, affirming her satisfaction with her appearance.

Earlier in her treatment, Shearer reflected on a challenging period following her second round of chemotherapy, when she experienced significant hair loss. “I knew it was coming—I even shaved my head in anticipation! But wow. It’s a shock to see and experience,” she shared, admitting that this was a pivotal moment in her cancer journey that made her feel self-conscious. The hair loss profoundly affected her self-image, leading her to feel that she looked more sick than strong during her treatment.

In 2023, as her hair started to grow back, she encountered a humorous but surprising consequence of the change: she became almost unrecognisable to people who had known her for years due to her short haircut. “I’ve been in four airports this week, and two TSA agents almost didn’t let me through because my hair didn’t match my photo ID,” she recounted, underscoring the level of transformation she experienced as a result of her illness and treatment.
Despite the questions she’s received regarding whether she would maintain her new short style, Shearer clarified her intention. “Asking whether I like it, if I’ll change it, if I’ll dye it … The answer is I do, and I won’t,” she stated, embracing her hair as a “badge of honour” that represents her journey through cancer.
Shearer proudly announced her cancer-free status in November 2022 but continues to share her journey with her followers, illustrating the ongoing process of recovery. Earlier this year, she discussed the challenges of dressing post-surgery, revealing that she had undergone over ten surgeries, including a double mastectomy. These experiences made finding suitable clothing difficult, as she sought to conceal the effects of her surgeries.
Expressing her frustrations with this aspect of recovery, she described how the notion of wearing a summer dress felt daunting. However, Shearer recently reached a breakthrough moment, stating, “the other day, I just said eff it, I’m going to wear what I want. So I did.” This act of self-acceptance was incredibly freeing for her, akin to “winning the lottery,” she confessed.
Ultimately, Shearer’s story highlights a profound journey of resilience, illustrating her decision to embrace her changed appearance rather than hide from it. She concluded her heartfelt message with a declaration of independence from societal perceptions: “It’s everyone else’s problem if they are uncomfortable with the way I look. I’m just going to be easy breezy with a glass of champagne all summer long.”
Through her candid updates and empowering messages, Clea Shearer continues to inspire many others facing similar challenges, promoting a narrative of strength, acceptance, and joy in reclaiming one’s identity after the trials of cancer treatment.
