Boy with Autism, 6, Had Cocaine in System When He Jumped Out Apartment Window

A mother in West Virginia is facing serious allegations of child neglect after her six-year-old son, who has autism, jumped from a second-storey window of their apartment on August 10. The boy was later found to have traces of cocaine in his system, prompting a police investigation.

Stevie Thibodeaux, aged 30, was arrested following the troubling incident at Unity Terrace Apartments in Fairmont, as reported by local news stations WDTV and WBOY. According to the reports, Thibodeaux claimed that she had been asleep in the apartment when her son made the dangerous leap from the window.

Witness accounts suggest that the window from which the child jumped lacked a screen, which may have contributed to the incident. Thibodeaux reportedly demonstrated to law enforcement officials that the apartment’s doors were secured with childproof locks, mechanisms she believed normally prevented her son from leaving the premises.

After the fall, the boy was swiftly taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation. Upon examination, medical personnel alerted law enforcement the following day, revealing that the child had tested positive for cocaine. Thibodeaux returned to the apartment while deputies were conducting their search and was taken into custody. During questioning, she allegedly confessed to consuming cocaine inside the apartment, reportedly stating that the plate used for drug ingestion had been kept in a closet.

As a result of these revelations, Thibodeaux has been charged with child neglect, categorised as creating a risk of serious injury or death, according to reports. She currently remains in custody at the North Central Regional Jail while awaiting further legal proceedings.
