A recent family trip to Glacier National Park ended in tragedy for a couple from Missouri when a freak rockfall resulted in critical injuries for one of the members. Rex Schowengerdt, 73, was on an RV journey with his wife, Chris, and his family when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The couple, who had recently retired from Kansas City, embarked on an exciting adventure through several national parks, making Glacier their first destination. According to his daughter, Amy Prince, Rex was particularly enthusiastic about visiting this iconic park. “Dad was so excited. He loved that place,” she shared with the Flathead Beacon.
On July 11, Rex and Chris, accompanied by Rex’s sister and her husband, were traversing the famed Going-to-the-Sun Road, a route celebrated for its stunning views but known for its precarious driving conditions due to narrow lanes and steep cliffs. In a shocking turn of events, a large rock fell from above, crashing through the roof of their vehicle and striking Rex, who was seated in the backseat.
Chris, who was beside her husband at the time, recounted the horror of the moment. The boulder inflicted severe damage, crushing Rex’s skull and forcing bone fragments into his brain stem. Despite the immediate chaos and distress, Amy expressed gratitude that her father appeared to have found a moment of peace in the midst of the tragedy. She recounted that when Chris looked over at Rex following the accident, he had a smile on his face.
“It hurt initially to hear, but it kind of brings peace to me as well because Dad was where he wanted to be and he was happy,” Amy reflected. “I know even before he left, he was happy. He was so excited to be there… He loved Glacier National Park.”
After the accident, Rex was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he remained for five days before succumbing to his injuries. His daughter noted that Rex’s passion for nature was something he instilled in his children, and she fondly recalled his words of wisdom about appreciating the beauty in the natural world. “When you’re out there in nature and you see the beauty, you just have to stop and take a second look. Really look,” Amy remembered her father saying. “I’m sure my dad was doing exactly that.”
Rex is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Chris, along with two children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The family is now faced with the difficult task of mourning their loss while cherishing the fond memories of a man who lived life passionately and fully.
In light of the devastating event, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the family during this challenging time. The funds raised are intended to support them as they prepare for a celebration of Rex’s life, scheduled for August 14.
