Teen Drowned at N.Y.C. Beach After Telling Lifeguards to Save His Best Friend First, His Mom Says

A tragic incident at Rockaway Beach in New York City claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy who selflessly put his friend’s safety above his own. Sir Audley Sykes, described by his mother as “extremely loving,” drowned on the evening of Sunday, 9 August, after encountering a rip current while swimming with his best friend.

The distressing event unfolded around 7:30 p.m. when Sykes and his friend, who is 18 years old but has not been publicly identified, found themselves struggling against the strong current. Despite the absence of lifeguards in their designated chairs due to swimming hours having concluded, they quickly responded when alerted to the situation and sprang into action.

According to reports, Sykes, who played for the Rosedale Jets football team, urged the lifeguards to prioritise his friend’s rescue. His mother, Patrice Thompson, recounted the harrowing moment, stating that her son insisted, “No, go and pull my best friend out of the water.” This selfless act reflects the character Sykes displayed throughout his life, as his mother fondly remembered his inclination to help others before considering his own safety.

In the rescue effort, lifeguards managed to pull both boys from the water, but sadly, only the friend survived. Sykes became the first reported drowning victim at a New York City beach this summer. Thompson shared her agonising experience of finding her son unresponsive on a stretcher, his heart beating only due to machines. Just two days after her birthday, she faced the heart-wrenching task of announcing her son’s passing.

Sykes had left a birthday gift for Thompson prior to the tragedy, and she recalled their last interaction with warmth. As she spoke emotionally to local media, she wore his hospital bracelet and football jersey, further emphasizing the deep bond they shared. The loss of her son, the eldest of seven brothers, has left an irreplaceable void in their family, which Thompson poignantly described.

In response to the tragic events, Thompson established a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses and family counselling. The fundraising effort has also served as a tribute to her son’s life, who was preparing to enter his senior year at Williamsburg High School. She remarked on his impact, saying, “He was extremely loving… He played a huge role in our family’s life and will truly be missed.”

Reflecting on her memories with Sykes, Thompson found solace in reminiscences of happier times, stating that those moments felt like they had not been completely stripped away. “They always say the good die young,” she added, expressing her belief that there must be a greater reason behind such a tragic loss.

The tragic incident has resonated throughout the community, with New York State Assembly member Alicia Hyndman expressing her heartbreak for Sykes’ family in a public statement. She praised his selflessness and encouraged the community to support the GoFundMe fundraiser. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation also extended its condolences, emphasising their deep sorrow at this devastating loss of life.
