Natalie Imbruglia Says Wild Spending Left Her ‘Living in a Basement’ with ‘No Money’ After She First Found Fame

Natalie Imbruglia has opened up about the challenges she faced in transitioning from acting to music, revealing that her journey was not as straightforward as she had hoped. Best known for her role as Beth Brennan on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, which she starred in from 1992 to 1994, Imbruglia initially found success in the world of acting. However, her decision to pivot towards a music career introduced her to a much tougher landscape.

Reflecting on her early career, Imbruglia appeared on a recent episode of the show Begin Again with Davina McCall, where she revisited her time in Neighbours and the difficult period that followed her departure. Although she was eager to dive into music, the reality of finding success was far more challenging than she anticipated. Imbruglia recounted her move to England, where stringent visa regulations made it difficult for her to continue acting, particularly in light of the local backlash against foreign actors taking roles meant for British talent.

In her struggle to navigate this new phase, she described a period marked by uncertainty and dwindling finances. “I was once very famous from Neighbours and had money coming in from appearances and gigs, but I found myself living in a basement in Chelsea,” she said. Despite being in a prestigious area, Imbruglia’s living conditions couldn’t have felt further from success. “I was in this huge mansion with no money, and it was really tough.”

During these challenging years, Imbruglia found herself questioning her future. She shared, “I had a lot of conversations with God about whether I’d ever get lucky again.” The pressure of fame had taken its toll, especially since this was the first time in her life that success had not come easily. In dealing with her frustrations, she turned to partying but eventually realised that she needed to make significant changes.

A turning point came when she received a call from her father, who bluntly asked when she would be pursuing a new job. Outraged at first, Imbruglia later recognised her father’s concern and felt compelled to refocus her efforts, particularly on her music. This renewed determination culminated in her working on the 1997 hit “Torn,” which would ultimately redefine her career.

The song unexpectedly found its way onto the airwaves in America through K-Rock, a station not typically associated with pop music. “I don’t know how it got played, but it kind of broke itself in America,” she recalled, describing how her newfound success led her on a whirlwind tour across the States to promote her music.

While achieving fame and winning awards brought immense gratification for Imbruglia, it didn’t come without its own set of anxieties. “I remember thinking, ‘You’re going to win every award this year and then nothing forever,’” she said, noting that her predictions were somewhat accurate as her award wins diminished in the years following her initial acclaim.

Despite these challenges, Imbruglia has continued to pursue her passion for music. Her upcoming release, *Algorithm*, which will be her seventh studio album, is set to hit stores on 4 September.
