Despite their hopes to keep costs below £120,000, Hannah candidly admits, “There were a couple of different things that were just a lot more expensive than we anticipated.”
To manage their budget effectively, the couple relied heavily on their network of friends and family. This support system included Hannah’s father, who is a carpenter, and church friends, all of whom pitched in to help. They even took to sketching their home’s layout on grid paper, demonstrating their commitment to hands-on involvement in the construction. “It’s been just God showing us, providing for us, showing us that we have such a good support system,” they noted.
The largest expenses arose from essential structural components, such as laying the concrete foundation, constructing the exterior, and framing the structure. They also made thoughtful decisions regarding some finishes to save on future expenses. For instance, Eli explained, “We ended up doing spray foam, which is a little more expensive upfront, but you’ll save money on your heating and cooling.”
Building a home at such a young age certainly isn’t without its challenges. Hannah reflected, “It’s challenging, especially with a partner because there’s so many decisions.” Having begun their home-building journey just one year into their relationship has required them to navigate disagreements and find common ground. As Eli put it, “You’ve got to learn the other person’s expectations and then where you can meet in the middle.”

Initially questioning Eli’s desire for an oversized garage, Hannah has come to understand the practicality of such a choice when viewing their future through a long-term lens. “If we’re looking at 10 years down the road, a bigger garage is the smarter option,” she explained.
