A Florida woman has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty following the harrowing rescue of 36 border collies from her home in Palm City. The investigation, which revealed appalling living conditions for the dogs, has sparked outrage and concern for their welfare.

Paige O’Donnell, 62, is facing a total of 72 charges, including 36 felony counts of animal cruelty. Authorities conducted a search of her residence on 10 August, which resulted in the discovery of the dogs living in deplorable conditions. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported that the animals were found covered in faeces and urine, severely neglected and in need of urgent medical attention.
The search warrant was executed after animal control officers observed the need for immediate intervention. Upon entering O’Donnell’s home, deputies were confronted with piles of excrement, soiled items, and a cluttered environment that made it difficult to locate the animals. Due to the hazardous conditions, officials donned protective suits to ensure their safety while rescuing the dogs.
Sheriff John Budensiek expressed his dismay at the situation during an interview, stating, “The food bowls, the water bowls in there are covered in faeces. The animals themselves…are covered with faeces.” The condition of the dogs was particularly shocking, as they had fared poorly in the care of O’Donnell, despite being a breed known for its beauty and vitality.
O’Donnell had claimed throughout the investigation that there were no more than five dogs in her possession. However, the reality was far different, as deputies uncovered a total of 36 animals. O’Donnell was in the process of bathing herself when authorities arrived, a stark contrast to the filthy state of the dogs in her care.
Currently, the rescued border collies are receiving vital medical treatment, grooming, and nourishment at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. Sarah Fisher, a spokesperson for the organisation, provided an update on the dogs’ condition, stating, “They arrived at our shelter severely matted with faeces and many were shut down, nearly catatonic upon arrival.” Positive signs have begun to emerge, with some dogs displaying improved spirits just one day after the rescue.
To restore the animals’ health, the shelter team is carefully grooming each border collie and administering medicated baths. Many of the dogs are being treated for skin and eye infections, and several are receiving pain and anxiety medications to help them adjust to their new environment. Fisher added, “They still have a long road ahead, but I think they are starting to realise their lives have changed for the better.”
As the Humane Society works tirelessly to rehabilitate these dogs, they are also appealing for public support to cover the costs of care. The rescue effort comes at a time when the shelter is already facing various challenges.
O’Donnell’s legal troubles began on 11 August, when she appeared in court for her first hearing. A judge set her bond at £275,000 and stipulated that she must not own or possess any animals, whether temporarily or permanently. The accused faces 36 felony counts for animal cruelty, along with 36 misdemeanour counts for failing to provide adequate care.
Sheriff Budensiek expressed his disappointment over O’Donnell’s actions, highlighting that numerous agencies had previously attempted to intervene and offer assistance. “I’m sad for the dogs…Anger really pops to the surface first for me because she knew better. She knew what she was doing,” he remarked. Despite attempts by the Humane Society and other organisations to help her, O’Donnell allegedly refused this support, resulting in the tragic circumstances faced by the dogs.
As the situation unfolds, the Humane Society has pledged to provide updates on the progress of the rescued border collies as they continue their recovery. While O’Donnell faces serious legal consequences for her actions, the immediate focus remains on ensuring the well-being of these animals as they embark on their journey towards a healthier and happier life.
