Abby Pimentel’s battle with stage 3 leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, has become an inspiring tale played out online. Diagnosed at the young age of 27, Abby faced a daunting journey that would involve months of rigorous treatments. However, her experience has not only illuminated the struggles faced by those undergoing cancer treatment but also offered hope and motivation to many.

Living in the Chicago metropolitan area, Abby received her grim diagnosis in June 2024, shortly before her birthday. At that time, doctors discovered a significant 9-centimetre tumour in her left leg. According to the National Cancer Institute, leiomyosarcoma is an uncommon and aggressive cancer that originates in smooth muscle tissue found in various hollow organs, including the stomach and uterus. Apart from the noticeable lump, Abby reported no symptoms prior to her diagnosis, leaving many shocked at the suddenness of her situation.

Following her diagnosis, Abby quickly initiated her treatment plan, which comprised chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and further chemotherapy over the course of nine months. By April 2025, she was finally able to ring the bell indicating the conclusion of her treatment—a moment filled with a mix of relief and joy.
However, the journey was far from straightforward. Throughout her chemotherapy sessions, Abby experienced the difficult side effect of hair loss, which she encountered twice due to the treatment being administered in two segments. The emotional toll of losing her hair was significant, leading her to shave her head shortly after she noticed the initial shedding. For Abby, it was a deeply personal experience; like many women, she had not realised how much of her identity was intertwined with her hair until it was gone.
To navigate these changes and retain a sense of normalcy during treatment, Abby turned to a wig that resembled her former hairstyle. It provided her with a familiar reflection at a time when her world felt increasingly alien. “In moments that I felt like I was losing myself, having a wig that made me look familiar helped me remember that I was still me,” she reflected.
Once Abby’s chemotherapy concluded, she shifted her focus towards recovery and began documenting her hair growth on TikTok. Initially, this progress was tinged with bittersweet feelings; while she was ecstatic about the growth, she struggled with the transformation of her appearance. “I was excited but still sad that I didn’t look how I used to,” she explained. Abby noticed that her hair returned in a significantly different texture, coming back with pronounced curls, a stark contrast to her previous straight locks.
As time has passed, Abby has begun to relish the small milestones of recovery, such as experimenting with hair accessories and styling her newly grown curls into playful designs. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “It’s been fun to have short hair and realise that I can still feel cute, something I never would have known if I hadn’t lost my hair.”
Her videos documenting her transformation have garnered significant attention, with one particular post achieving over 7 million views. This reach has opened a dialogue, inviting comments and messages of solidarity and encouragement from viewers around the globe. For Abby, the heartfelt responses from other cancer survivors and their families have been especially meaningful. One message resonated deeply, coming from a survivor of sarcoma who had thrived for nine years—a beacon of hope in her fight against such a rare disease.
Abby’s primary motivation for sharing her story lies in her desire to inspire others who are undergoing similar experiences, conveying the idea that life can resume post-treatment. “I hope that others can see that life does go on, and the other side of chemotherapy is real,” she emphasised. “I hope others see that hair does grow back, healing does happen, and you will start to feel like yourself again.”
Through her account, Pimentel advocates not just for the physical recovery, but for emotional resilience and joy that can follow even the hardest trials. Her journey serves as a reminder that healing is multifaceted, and many find strength in community and shared stories during their darkest times. As she continues to thrive post-treatment, Abby is not just reclaiming her identity but also energising a global community of cancer survivors who are navigating their paths towards recovery.
