In an inspiring showcase of ingenuity and compassion, a 13-year-old from Utah has dedicated his summer to designing a custom 3D-printed wheelchair for a toddler in need. Zac Waters has combined his enthusiasm for technology with a heartfelt desire to support others, proving that age is no barrier to making a significant impact in the community.

Zac’s journey into the world of 3D printing began when he stumbled upon a YouTube video. Intrigued, he diligently researched and honed his skills, setting the stage for a profound project aimed at enhancing the mobility of a young girl. According to reports from ABC 4, Zac invested an astonishing 300 hours over the summer creating the wheelchair, investing considerable time in the design, printing, testing, and, most importantly, the assembly of the device tailored for a 21-month-old child.
The project was realised in partnership with MakeGood, a nonprofit organisation committed to providing free assistive devices produced by volunteer makers. As stated on their website, MakeGood believes that “assistive technology should be accessible to everyone.” In line with this ethos, Zac leveraged designs offered by the organisation to create a functional and stylish chair for the toddler.
Describing his motivations, Zac remarked, “It combines my two favourite things in life: 3D printing and helping people in need. It just makes sense!” His selflessness and dedication shine through in the effort he has poured into this project, underscoring his commitment to making a difference in the lives of those facing challenges.
The finished wheelchair boasts numerous thoughtful features, including a detachable cup holder and tray table, as well as an area designed to accommodate heavier medical equipment at the back of the chair. The adaptability of the chair is enhanced by an adjustable footrest and headrest, ensuring that it can grow alongside its young user. In a personal touch, Zac incorporated pink accents into the design, reflecting the toddler’s favourite colour, while also adding vibrant green and yellow details.
Zac’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Noam Platt, the founder and president of MakeGood, expressed appreciation for the numerous volunteer makers contributing their time and resources to assist others. “We at MakeGood are so thrilled to see the Toddler Mobility Trainer project grow and bring makers and families together,” Platt stated. He highlighted the significance of projects like Zac’s, which exemplify the potential for makers to be genuine heroes within their communities.
Zac has expressed immense joy in witnessing the happiness his work has brought to the toddler and her family. “It makes me so happy to print it and see the smiles and how happy the family is, that really need the wheelchair,” he shared. His impact extends beyond just the creation of a wheelchair; it encapsulates the power of kindness and innovation working harmoniously.
Reflecting on her grandson’s accomplishments, Zac’s grandmother, Charlotte Waters, shared words of wisdom that emphasise the lasting influence individuals can have. “We hope he always remembers that the greatest legacy anyone can leave is to make someone else’s life better,” she said. She further emphasised that Zac’s age does not define his capacity to effect positive change but rather his character does.
As Zac looks to the future, he remains hopeful about expanding his skills and knowledge within the 3D printing community. His project serves as a reminder that even young individuals can make meaningful contributions, encouraging others to harness their talents for the benefit of those around them. The outpouring of admiration for Zac’s initiative highlights a growing recognition of the role of technology in addressing societal challenges, fostering a sense of community through creative solutions.
The story of Zac Waters exemplifies not just the potential of modern technology but also the enduring values of empathy and generosity that can drive societal progress. As he continues his journey, it is clear that his experiences have laid the groundwork for a promising future, inspiring others in his wake to pursue their own passions with an eye toward making a difference.
