Former U.S. Marine and teacher Robert Gilman has returned to the United States after being detained in Russia since 2022. The announcement of his release came from Donald Trump, who heralded it as a significant humanitarian gesture by the Russian authorities.

In an entry shared on Truth Social on August 11, Trump revealed that Gilman’s return was the result of discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasised that the release did not involve any prisoner exchange, stating, “Russia has agreed to release him on a very Humanitarian Basis. We appreciate this decision, and the fact that Russia asked for no one in return.”
Accompanying Gilman on his flight home was his mother, Nancy, with their arrival expected at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Trump noted that the return of Gilman marked a significant moment, pointing out that the 32-year-old had endured over four years of detention in Russia. The President mentioned he had priorly assisted in the release of over 100 Americans during his administration.
In a celebratory tone, Trump shared a photograph of Gilman aboard the aircraft, flanked by his mother and supporters who were displaying a U.S. flag. Gilman appeared in high spirits, wearing casual attire and grinning with a pillow positioned behind his neck. Trump also relayed a light-hearted moment, saying, “I just spoke to him, and he had one request — a GREAT cheeseburger when he lands. I will take care of that!”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined in the celebration on social media, reiterating the significance of Gilman’s release. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts to secure the release of other detained Americans, including Stephen Hubbard, another individual wrongfully held in Russia. Global Reach, a nonprofit organisation focused on rescuing wrongfully detained Americans abroad, announced that Gilman would receive medical and psychological evaluation at a military facility in Texas. This step underscores the challenges he may have faced during his time in custody.
Robert Gilman was initially arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer and had received a prison sentence of three and a half years. The U.S. State Department later classified his detention as wrongful, and while incarcerated, he faced further convictions related to assaults on prison staff, leading to an extended sentence that saw him facing a total of ten years.
Following the announcement of his release, Gilman’s family expressed their gratitude for the efforts that contributed to his homecoming. His sister, Lexie Hudson, specifically thanked Trump and U.S. Senator Ed Markey for their roles in advocating for her brother’s release. Hudson referred to Trump’s interventions as crucial and lamented the treatment her brother endured during his detention, questioning the motivations behind such actions.
