A seven-year-old boy from Virginia Beach has been commended for his remarkable presence of mind during a family emergency that saw him saving his mother’s life. Zayden Curran Herndon’s quick actions came to light after his mother, Kailene Curran Herndon, suffered a seizure in their home while preparing breakfast on 21 July.

In a situation that would be daunting for anyone, let alone a young child, Zayden acted promptly. When his mother became unresponsive, he called the emergency services. Displaying maturity beyond his years, he provided the dispatchers with their address and calmly answered their questions despite the distressing circumstances. Simultaneously, he managed to comfort his infant sister, who was crying during the incident.
The Virginia Beach Police Department formally acknowledged Zayden’s bravery by presenting him with a Citizen Lifesaving Award on 11 August. The recognition highlights the significance of his actions in helping to summon assistance for his family during a critical time. Officer James Hylton, who nominated Zayden for the award, noted that his composure and concern for his family were notable for a child of his age.
Zayden’s mother shared her perspective on the event, recalling that she was preparing breakfast when she suddenly lost consciousness. Her next memory was of waking up in the hospital. Upon learning what her son had done in her absence, she expressed immense pride in Zayden’s decisive actions. “From what they told me, he picked his sister up. He told me he put her on the dining room table to make sure I was OK,” she explained. Zayden assured her, “It’s OK mummy, it’s OK,” as he provided comfort during the crisis.
Kailene revealed that Zayden had been taught how to handle emergency situations from a very young age. “We’ve practiced a lot just because we never know if and when it’s going to happen,” she explained. Her proactive approach to teaching her son the importance of emergency protocols seems to have paid off, as Zayden’s fast response was instrumental in the timely arrival of help.
Officer Hylton reflected on Zayden’s bravery and composure, stating, “He speaks calmly about what had happened with mum.” He further expressed admiration for the young boy, remarking on the significant weight of responsibility Zayden bore in that moment. “That’s a lot for a seven-year-old – how impressive,” Hylton added.
At the award ceremony, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate praised not only Zayden’s actions but also the upbringing that prepared him for such a situation.
