According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC), the incident occurred as a group of incarcerated individuals were returning from their evening meal. The ODRC confirmed that those affected were promptly transported to an external medical facility for treatment, with one person requiring airlifting due to the severity of their condition.
As the situation developed, officials provided updates indicating that by the following morning, nine of the sixteen individuals had been discharged and were back at the prison. However, seven remained in hospital, with one individual described as being in a serious condition. The remaining six hospitalised individuals were reported to be stable and not facing life-threatening issues.
The department expressed its gratitude for the diligent response from the prison staff as well as other emergency first responders, highlighting their critical role during the emergency. In a statement, the ODRC reassured that there were no deaths or injuries among the prison staff as a result of the lightning strike.
Meanwhile, first responders and utility crews have been working tirelessly into the night to respond to the severe storms that contributed to the hazardous circumstances. The storms, part of a recent derecho, a powerful and long-lasting wind event, uprooted trees and downed power lines, complicating the rescue efforts in the area.
The Grafton Correctional Institution, established in 1988, has the capacity to house approximately 2,400 inmates across a mix of minimum and medium security classifications, suggesting a significant number of individuals could have been in the vicinity when the storm hit.
In light of this incident, the ODRC has stated that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and assess the circumstances surrounding the lightning strike further.
