A 69-year-old woman from Florida has been arrested following allegations that she stabbed a horse multiple times while a child looked on. Shirley Zimmerley reportedly committed the act on July 26 at Florida Horseback Trail Rides, located in Cocoa, Florida. The incident came to light when the child, who was present for therapy, alerted their parents about the distressing event, prompting them to contact the authorities.

According to the arrest warrant and statements from Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Zimmerley reportedly expressed her frustration with the horse’s behaviour by both stabbing it and whipping it with a device. “She stabbed a freaking horse with a knife, then started whipping the horse because she was frustrated over the horse’s behaviour,” Sheriff Ivey stated during a press briefing. He further noted that the horse was found to be in a state of severe malnutrition, with a body condition score of only three out of nine.
When deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) arrived at the stable, they discovered not only the injured horse but also other horses on the property with open wounds. As a result, the authorities mandated veterinary care for all the horses housed there. The presence of additional suffering animals has prompted further concern from local officials.
Zimmerley’s version of events, according to Sheriff Ivey, is equally troubling. She allegedly claimed that the stabbing marks on the horse were merely scratches inflicted by a cat, a statement that has been met with disbelief in light of the circumstances.
