In a notable broadcasting blunder, UK radio station Radio Caroline has issued an apology after mistakenly proclaiming the death of King Charles III in May. The announcement occurred during The Barry Marsh Show, where three pre-recorded statements were aired, leading to confusion among listeners.

The incident took place on May 19, when Radio Caroline erroneously interrupted its regular music programming to relay the false news about the monarch, who is currently 77 years old. Ofcom, the UK’s media regulator, reported that it received two complaints in relation to the premature announcements, which included claims that “news media” had verified King Charles’ passing.

Following the broadcast, which was punctuated by a rendition of the national anthem, listeners were met with an unsettling silence lasting approximately 16 minutes. The broadcast chaos only ended when the host of the show released an apology roughly half an hour after the erroneous statements aired. “I’ve just been informed that we’ve played in error some information a little earlier,” the host remarked, clarifying that King Charles was indeed alive.
In a bulletin released on 10 August, Ofcom concluded that Radio Caroline had breached two clauses of the Broadcasting Code. The first of these stipulations requires that news is conveyed with “due accuracy and presented with due impartiality.” The second clause mandates that any significant errors in broadcasting should be addressed and corrected swiftly on air.
Radio Caroline explained that the incident arose when a member of staff, while performing maintenance on a studio computer, came across the files containing the erroneous announcement. Despite the existence of strict protocols meant to regulate the airing of such sensitive information, the staffer, out of curiosity, decided to play the files. This action disrupted the ongoing remote show, resulting in the inaccurate statements being broadcast.
Once the staff member realised the mistake, they ceased playing the files and exited the studio. Unfortunately, the show’s host was engaged in a call at the time and did not immediately notice that incorrect information was being aired. Upon becoming aware of the situation, he promptly reached out to a station engineer for assistance. The engineer, already informed of the blunder, worked to switch back to the standard programming.
Radio Caroline has stated that it took the mishap very seriously, with staff members working diligently in the 30 minutes leading up to the on-air apology. The station indicated that the staffer involved in the incident has been reprimanded and has since issued an apology for the error. Furthermore, Radio Caroline has confirmed that strict procedures have been reiterated to all hosts and staff to prevent any future occurrences of a similar nature.
The radio station, known for its music programming spanning from the 1960s to the present day, endeavoured to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly in light of the criticism it faced.
In a statement to Ofcom, Radio Caroline emphasized its commitment to upholding broadcasting standards and delivering accurate information to its audience. The files containing the inaccurate death announcement have reportedly been secured on an external hard drive to ensure they do not resurface on air.
As the airwaves continue to be an integral means of communication, the importance of diligence in broadcasting has never been more apparent. The incident has drawn attention to the necessity for broadcasters to implement effective measures to verify information before dissemination, particularly concerning sensitive matters such as the health and wellbeing of public figures.
Ofcom’s findings and Radio Caroline’s response serve as a reminder of the potential ramifications of irresponsible broadcasting. The station’s swift acknowledgment of the mistake reflects an understanding of the considerable responsibility that comes with the power to inform the public. In an unpredictable media landscape, adherence to established codes and practices is vital for maintaining public trust and ensuring a well-informed audience.
