In a poignant loss for wildlife enthusiasts and eagle watchers alike, Jackie, the celebrated bald eagle known for her captivating presence at Big Bear Lake, has passed away at the age of 14. The Ojai Raptor Center in California confirmed her death on Monday, August 10, revealing that she had succumbed following over three weeks of intensive medical treatment.

Jackie had been in care since July 18, when she was discovered grounded and unable to fly. Witnesses reported that she had engaged in a territorial dispute with two younger eagles, leading to her weakened condition. After being rescued, veterinary staff worked diligently to save her life, but she faced numerous health complications, including severe anaemia linked to a mysterious illness that hindered her recovery.
The centre’s staff shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing their deep sorrow: “It is with profound sadness that we share that [Jackie] passed away in the early hours of this morning.” Her dedicated team of caregivers had monitored her around the clock, employing blood transfusions and oxygen therapy in an effort to boost her blood cell count. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, her health continued to decline.
Jackie’s life was characterised by her bond with her mate, Shadow, and their endeavours to raise eaglets. The eagle couple became a sensation through Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), a nonprofit organisation that operates a 24/7 livestream camera on their nest. This incredible focus allowed millions of viewers around the planet to witness the daily lives of these magnificent birds, viewing their nurturing antics and the challenges they faced in the wild.
Throughout her life, Jackie and Shadow became involved in numerous dramatic moments, from joyous hatchings to heartbreaking losses. Their journey together began in 2018 when Shadow took over Jackie’s nest from her previous mate, Mr. B. Over the years, they experienced the highs of successfully raising eaglets in 2019 and again in 2022, juxtaposed with the loss of eggs in the subsequent years. One of the most notable tragedies occurred earlier this year when a raven attacked their nest shortly after Jackie laid her first eggs.
Despite her declining health, Jackie’s influence did not wane among her fans. She became a source of inspiration and camaraderie among eagle watchers who founded a community around her story. Her life and those of her chicks were subject to intense scrutiny and affection from thousands of followers, who tuned in to watch the eagles build their nest, hunt, and rear their young.
As the news of Jackie’s death spread, FOBBV announced plans to shift their focus onto Shadow and his future. Kathi Voisard, a representative from the organisation, noted that efforts would be made to ensure that Shadow would not remain alone, given the likelihood of ‘visiting eagles’ seen in the area. “We’ll see if one is around at the right time, at the right age to potentially form a bond,” Voisard remarked, emphasising the importance of companionship for Shadow during this difficult period.
The Ojai Raptor Center is expected to release further details regarding the circumstances surrounding Jackie’s demise after conducting final examinations. They aim to provide insights that might clarify the health challenges she endured while in their care.
