Fla. Man Who Shot K-9 Officer Was Once Accused of Unspeakable Crimes Against Minor in ‘Princess Tent’: Sheriff

A K-9 officer named Ace is recovering after losing a leg during a violent confrontation in Florida, where he was shot while assisting deputies. The incident occurred as law enforcement attempted to apprehend 27-year-old Angel Bowers, who had failed to appear in court regarding serious allegations involving child sexual offences.

Bowers was facing charges linked to an incident from 2024, where he was accused of grooming and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in a makeshift children’s “princess tent”. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd provided details of the case during a press conference, explaining that Bowers’ absence from a scheduled court appearance prompted a bondsman to seek his arrest.

Authorities reported that on the morning of August 3, the bondsman attempted to locate Bowers at a residence in Lakeland. After receiving no response, he learned that Bowers was residing in a tent in nearby woods. The bondsman, along with deputies and K-9 Ace, proceeded to the site. As they attempted to coax Bowers out, shots rang out, prompting a rapid exchange of gunfire.

During the encounter, Ace, a seven-year-old German Shepherd, sustained serious injuries from gunfire. Sheriff Judd acknowledged the swift response from veterinary staff who rushed to administer care. Despite their efforts, Ace suffered a critical injury that necessitated the amputation of his left front leg.

Following the shooting, deputies called for Bowers to surrender, but received no response. A SWAT team later engaged the tent and discovered Bowers deceased, still clutching a 9mm firearm equipped with an extended magazine. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds after firing upon the deputies.

In a statement, Sheriff Judd described the gunfight, expressing relief that no further injuries were incurred among the responding officers. He remarked, “It’s just the grace of God that our K-9 deputy and the other two backup deputies weren’t shot and killed.” The sheriff underscored the bravery of Ace, stating that the K-9 had acted to protect his handler and other law enforcement personnel.

Legal proceedings against Bowers began earlier in 2024, where indications emerged that he had engaged in sexual misconduct with the underage girl. According to documents obtained by authorities, the assault on the victim occurred while she was asleep, leaving her confused and unable to react as Bowers perpetrated the crime.

In light of Ace’s injuries, the sheriff announced plans for his retirement, acknowledging the significant sacrifice the K-9 made in service of his team. Sheriff Judd praised Ace’s contributions, stating, “Ace took rounds and shots for us to protect us.”

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident comprehensively, working to clear any remaining questions surrounding the confrontation.
