Dad Dies Trying to Save Sons and Other Distressed Swimmers from Riptide

In a harrowing incident off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Kevin Foster, a marketing executive and devoted father, tragically lost his life while attempting to save swimmers, including his two sons, from a riptide. The events unfolded on Friday, 31 July, when the family day at the beach turned into a scene of chaos and rescue.

Foster, who was well-known in his community for advocating affordable housing and participating in various local initiatives, bravely jumped into the water to assist several individuals struggling against the powerful current at Long Point. Despite the swift actions of the West Tisbury Police Department and local fire rescue personnel who arrived shortly after being alerted, it was too late for Foster. His teenage sons, Kenneth and Kaden, managed to survive, but unfortunately, Foster did not return to shore.

Local authorities confirmed that lifeguards were not on duty at the private beach where the incident took place. However, three lifeguards from a nearby beach, situated approximately five miles away, came to help and entered the water to rescue swimmers in distress. While they successfully brought four individuals back to safety, Foster was later transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In a heartfelt statement, the Foster family expressed their profound gratitude towards the first responders who selflessly assisted that day. “We offer a very special thank you to the first responders on Martha’s Vineyard who courageously gave of themselves to support our family and other distressed swimmers that day,” they noted. The family further acknowledged the compassion shown by fellow beachgoers whose support would never be forgotten as they too grappled with the tragic outcome.

Kevin Foster has since been laid to rest, with his funeral taking place on 11 August. Messages of remembrance paint a picture of a man deeply committed to his family and community. Reflecting on their loss, his wife Nadia shared a poignant tribute, conveying the profound grief felt by their family. She described Foster as a beloved father, husband, son, and friend, and noted that his passing in a location he cherished, surrounded by loved ones, made the loss even more heart-wrenching.

State Representative Marjorie Decker, who has known Nadia since childhood, paid tribute to Kevin in a heartfelt social media post. She referred to him as an extraordinary husband, devoted father, and cherished friend. Decker characterised Foster as family, expressing how he became integral to her life and the lives of those around him.

In her reflections, Decker revealed the admiration she held for Kevin and his contributions to the community. He served as a member of the Cambridge Community Preservation Act committee, working to preserve affordable housing and enhance community life. Decker highlighted how the Foster family has consistently opened their home to others, fostering a deep sense of community and belonging among friends and neighbours.

In support of Kevin’s sons, a GoFundMe page has been established to fund their education, which has seen an impressive outpouring of generosity, attracting over £281,000 in contributions. The community’s response is a testament to the impact that Kevin had on those around him, demonstrating the love and support that continues to envelop the Foster family in their time of sorrow.

As the community rallies to support the grieving family, Nadia expressed her heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has offered condolences, assistance, and prayers. She noted, “Your presence has reminded us that even in our deepest grief, we are surrounded by an extraordinary community of love.”
