Former President Donald Trump has sparked controversy regarding the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Despite a recent court ruling that dismissed vandalism charges against former Olympian David Hearn, Trump continues to assert that Hearn was responsible for damage to the iconic site.

On Thursday, 6 August, a Superior Court judge in Washington D.C. cleared Hearn of any wrongdoing related to accusations of property destruction. This legal decision came after Hearn, 67, pleaded not guilty to a charge of vandalism, which accused him of damaging the Reflecting Pool valued at over £1,000.

The former slalom canoeist was apprehended on 19 June while riding his bike near the Reflecting Pool. Hearn later clarified that he merely leaned over to feel a detached piece of the pool’s liner and did not engage in any malicious behaviour. This defence did not deter Trump from insisting Hearn was guilty, despite the absence of video evidence to support the allegations.
In his post, Trump stated, “Numerous other events took place, including using an acid-like material on the just installed grass adjoining the Pool,” suggesting that there were other contributors to the damage. He acknowledged a “contractor error” in the recent renovation of the Reflecting Pool, attributing some of the flaws to the hasty workmanship aimed at meeting a deadline for Independence Day celebrations. However, he downplayed the significance, claiming only a “very small area” of the pool was impacted.
Adding to the drama, Trump expressed frustration with D.C. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who earlier filed a motion to dismiss the charges against Hearn. Following the judge’s ruling to drop the case, Trump publicly chastised Pirro, accusing her of “choking” and making a “terrible mistake” for her actions, suggesting that her decisions undermined legal proceedings.
