In an inspiring turn of events for a family-run business, Rich Collection Italia, a shoe shop in Shoreditch, East London, has experienced a remarkable resurgence, all thanks to a viral TikTok video. Zineb Lazraq, daughter of the store’s owner, helped save her father’s establishment from impending closure by harnessing the power of social media.

The shoe store, which has served the local community for 34 years, was facing uncertain prospects as it struggled with declining foot traffic, particularly among its regular customers. Zineb, who has seen her father invest countless hours into the business, noted that the shop was on the brink of closure after facing challenges associated with gentrification and rising rents in the area. “The whole street where my dad’s shoe shop is used to be bustling with similar businesses, but one by one, they began to shut down due to high costs,” she explained.

Rachid Lazraq, Zineb’s father and the shop’s owner, was preparing to close the doors for good, believing that the decline in visitors had marked the end of an era. “His primary customer base, which consisted largely of older African customers, began to vanish as new, trendier shops and cafés moved in,” Zineb recounted.
A stroke of luck arrived in May when a French TikTok creator featured Rich Collection Italia in a video, dubbing it a “hidden gem.” This post quickly went viral, racking up over 300,000 views, igniting a newfound interest in the shop. For Zineb, the post was an unexpected revelation that her father’s footwear could appeal to a younger audience, debunking her previous belief that the store only offered “auntie shoes.” In response to the overwhelming online engagement, Zineb decided to create her own TikTok content, showcasing the store’s trendy Y2K-style sandals.
The impact was immediate. As Zineb’s videos gained traction, enthusiastic customers began forming long queues outside the shop. “It wasn’t just a trickle of customers anymore; it was a flood,” she noted, detailing how she quickly adapted to the new demands of the burgeoning business, despite having no retail experience. “I jumped in at the deep end and started learning on the go,” she added.
This wave of popularity arrived just in time, as the shop was initially slated to close in late June. However, Rachid removed the closing sign by June 10 due to the surge in business. “Even though the activity has slowed down a bit since those initial videos, we still see a steady flow of customers,” Zineb commented. “On weekends, lines form outside, while weekdays are a bit quieter.”
With the future once again looking promising, Zineb is eyeing plans to expand their presence online. “We are currently working on establishing a website. I’ve had inquiries from people all over the world interested in my dad’s shoes,” she explained. The burgeoning demand has not only safeguarded their business but also allowed them to take on additional staff. They’ve recently hired a local assistant, ensuring that the family business continues to thrive while contributing to the local economy.
Zineb reflected on the past few months as both “amazing” and “overwhelming,” expressing a blend of gratitude and regret for not stepping in to assist her father sooner. “I sometimes find myself thinking, ‘Why didn’t I do this earlier?’ My dad was struggling for so long, but everything has fallen into place at the right time,” she shared.
Despite the challenges, Rachid is now focused on keeping the store packed with fresh stock. “For the first time since COVID, he’s actively sourcing new deliveries,” Zineb stated, highlighting their optimism about future sales. “We just had a new shipment arrive last week and more is on the way. There’s a reason to believe we’re not going anywhere soon.”
Reflecting on their journey, Zineb is appreciative of the community’s support, stating, “It’s heartwarming to see how our story has not only impacted our family but also positively affected surrounding businesses.” Other local establishments, including a nearby Japanese restaurant, have reported increased patronage, thanks to the revitalised interest in Rich Collection Italia.
As they ponder their next steps, Zineb hopes that her father’s experience can serve as a lesson for other small business owners. Rachid has come to understand the significant role social media can play in revitalising a struggling brand and now encourages others facing challenges to persist, even when times are tough. “He wants them to know that there is hope for recovery, just as we have found,” Zineb concluded.
With a renewed focus on both online and in-store sales, Rich Collection Italia stands at the forefront of a promising revival, reminding us of the potential power of community support and modern technology in safeguarding beloved local enterprises.
