**Mother Outraged After Son Found Alone on School Bus in New Jersey**

A mother from New Jersey has expressed her outrage and concern following an alarming incident in which her 9-year-old son woke up alone on an empty school bus after inadvertently falling asleep during his journey to summer school. The distressing event took place on Thursday, August 6, at the transportation yard of Gloucester Township Public Schools (GTPS).

Wanda Chandler revealed to local news outlet WPVI that the incident occurred on what was meant to be her son’s last day of summer classes at Union Valley Elementary School in Blackwood. She received a shocking phone call approximately two and a half hours later from the school district, informing her that her son had not arrived at school.

Upon discovering that her son had been left behind on the bus, Chandler felt a wave of panic and frustration. The young boy later explained how he had to open the bus doors himself and venture out in search of assistance. “I lifted up this thing to open the door. I got off the bus and looked for anyone. I found this man, so I asked him, ‘Do you know where I can go back?’” he recounted, demonstrating remarkable poise for someone so young.

After awakening on the empty bus parked at the depot, the boy encountered a GTPS employee who was instrumental in bringing him indoors. This employee was the first to realise the seriousness of the situation, subsequently leading to the notification of the mother and the involvement of Child Protective Services.

Chandler acknowledged the help her son eventually received but emphasised that the terrifying experience left her with many unanswered questions. “A lot of things could’ve happened,” she stated, reflecting on the potential dangers her son could have faced had he not awoken. “Thank God he’s safe — that’s number one — but what if he didn’t wake up? What if he walked out into that bus depot and a stranger took him? This could’ve ended altogether differently,” she added.

The mother’s concerns are further amplified by the fact that her family had recently moved into the district. She enrolled her son in the summer program with the aim of helping him adjust to taking the bus independently when the new school year began. Given this context, Chandler’s disappointment is palpable, compounded by the belief that better protocols should have prevented the situation.

“There should have been a bus driver and aide on the bus helping children get to their destination. This is unacceptable. Shame on you. You should’ve known better. You should’ve practiced all safety protocols that were in place,” Chandler asserted during her conversation with WPVI.
