**Construction of New Helipad on White House South Lawn Underway**

Construction on a new helipad on the South Lawn of the White House is progressing, though not without complications. Recent reports indicated that the newly installed granite seal at the site had already been torn up, prompting a redesign of the landing area. President Donald Trump has asserted that the structure is essential to mitigate damage to the South Lawn caused by the more powerful aircraft used for Marine One.

The renovations, which include a helipad designed to accommodate the new Marine One helicopters scheduled for delivery in 2024, are part of a larger $600 million renovation project at the White House. This extensive improvement initiative also encompasses a substantial ballroom and modifications to key Washington D.C. monuments.

According to information from The Associated Press, photographers captured images of the helipad as renovations commenced and saw the granite seal being dismantled. In a statement provided to PEOPLE, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle affirmed that adjustments are a normal part of the project’s evolution and are intended to ensure the finished structure meets the needs of the current administration.

Ingle asserted the necessity of the new helipad, emphasising that it would not only facilitate safe landings for the President but also help protect the iconic South Lawn. “For years, the White House has desperately needed a proper helipad on White House grounds,” he remarked. “Thanks to President Trump, the White House has never looked better, and it will only continue to improve under his leadership.”

Despite the ongoing construction, reports indicated that President Trump expressed frustration with the appearance of the helipad following the installation of the granite seal, leading to requests for contractors to revise their work. The helipad is situated in an area that once hosted a temporary UFC arena for a cage fight, coinciding with Trump’s 80th birthday celebration in June.

Further clarification has emerged regarding funding for the project. President Trump stated that the construction of the helipad is being financed by Sikorsky Aircraft, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, rather than relying on taxpayer money. The urgency for this new construction, according to the President, stems from the expected consequences of using more powerful helicopters that would indeed affect the South Lawn’s grass.

“It’s not that the grass gets discolored — it gets ripped out,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office last month, highlighting the need for a durable helipad to combat these issues.

The helipad is just one component of President Trump’s broader renovation agenda during his current term in office. Earlier efforts included the demolition of the East Wing to pave the way for the expansive ballroom project and significant changes to the historic Rose Garden, which has since gained a stone patio and a “Presidential Walk of Fame.”

Additionally, Trump has made various cosmetic enhancements to the Oval Office, with updates that include decorative gilded frames and modifications to the rug’s colour scheme. Beyond the White House, the administration has undertaken alterations to notable monuments in the capital, such as restoring the gilding on horse statues located outside the Lincoln Memorial and resurfacing the Reflecting Pool — a task that faced challenges shortly after it was completed.

Plans are also being developed for a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, which is intended to further enrich the architectural landscape in the vicinity of Washington D.C. However, as of now, ground has yet to be broken on this particular project.
