Fla. Man Found Asleep on JetBlue Plane After Climbing Fence and Sneaking Onto Aircraft During Maintenance

A man in Florida has been arrested after allegedly sneaking onto a JetBlue aircraft and falling asleep on board. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, August 2, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where 32-year-old Sammuel Lackey is said to have gained access to the aircraft during a maintenance check.

According to local authorities, Lackey climbed over a fence to reach the parked JetBlue Airbus A320, which was situated on the premises of Jetscape Services for routine maintenance. It is reported that he utilised portable steps designed for staff use to enter the aircraft through an open rear door. Once inside, Lackey reportedly hid in the plane’s bathroom, evading detection by the maintenance crew.

Maintenance workers completed their duties around 4:25 a.m. local time and inadvertently secured the aircraft with Lackey still inside, pushing it into a designated parking space. Upon discovering the man approximately an hour later, JetBlue staff were taken aback to find him asleep on board. Surveillance footage captured his unorthodox boarding process, documenting his actions as he unlawfully entered the plane.

As a result of the incident, the Airbus was unable to proceed to its designated gate for a scheduled flight. JetBlue was forced to deploy an alternative aircraft, incurring a financial loss estimated at over £1,900 (or $2,400.96), reported as the cost linked to this interruption.

Authorities swiftly took action following the discovery. Lackey was detained and now faces multiple charges, including unarmed burglary of an occupied conveyance, criminal mischief exceeding £800 (over $1,000), and interrupting or impairing critical infrastructure. As of August 6, he remained in custody at the Broward Main Jail, with his bond set at £8,000 (approximately $10,000).

In the aftermath of the incident, JetBlue released a statement emphasising their commitment to safety. The airline affirmed that the well-being of both customers and crew members remains their top priority and stated that they will collaborate fully with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.
