After nearly seventy years of thrilling rides and creating cherished memories, the Mad Mouse steel roller coaster at Arnolds Park Amusement Park in northern Iowa officially closed its doors on 29 July 2023. The amusement park took to social media to commemorate the beloved ride, expressing gratitude for the joy it brought to families over generations.

The Mad Mouse has a rich history that began in 1959 when it first opened at Bell’s Amusement Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This original home allowed the ride to entertain countless visitors until 1976, when it was transferred to Joyland Amusement Park in Lubbock, Texas. In 2019, the roller coaster found a new home in Arnolds Park, where it was given a final lease of life by park officials eager to keep the tradition alive.
Jon Pausley, the CEO of Arnolds Park, reflected on the impact of the Mad Mouse, describing it as a ride that evoked a mix of love and trepidation among guests. “The specific Mad Mouse provided decades of excitement, scares, and memories with its hairpin turns and fear-inducing thrills,” he stated. The ride offered something for everyone, with riders either returning for more or deciding it was a one-time experience.
Despite its popularity, the Mad Mouse faced increasing maintenance challenges. With extensive use over the years, it required frequent repairs, welding, and inspections. Each inspection process could lead to extended downtime, which became more problematic given the park’s limited 100-day operating season. Pausley noted that the constraints of space in the smaller park meant it was no longer practical to keep the ride in operation.
As the disassembly of the Mad Mouse begins, a portion of the ride’s history will be preserved for future generations. At least one car from the coaster will be relocated to the Arnolds Park Museum, while additional parts are set to be sent to Little Amerricka Amusement Park in Marshall, Wisconsin. This park is currently home to the last remaining operational Mad Mouse, ensuring that the legacy of this iconic ride continues.
The American Coaster Enthusiasts, a prominent organisation devoted to amusement rides, also recognised the significance of the Mad Mouse. They acknowledged its role in shaping the experiences of countless riders. In a Facebook post, the club expressed thanks, highlighting the ride’s journey through Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa while acknowledging its impact on amusement park history.
Looking to the future, Arnolds Park Amusement Park has announced plans for a new thrilling attraction, expected to debut in 2027. This exciting development aims to attract visitors while honouring the park’s tradition of providing exhilarating experiences for guests.
