In a remarkable turn of events in the Puglia region of Italy, a woman who inadvertently discarded a winning lottery ticket worth over €1 million has been reunited with her prize, largely thanks to the dedicated efforts of local waste management workers. The incident unfolded when the woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, mistakenly believed her ticket was not a winner after a self-service lottery terminal indicated it was “not payable”.

According to reports from Italian news agency ANSA, the woman discarded the ticket in a store near Bari, believing all hope was lost. However, shortly after the ticket was tossed away, a family member alerted her to the potential value of the ticket, prompting a hasty return to the shop. By that time, though, the trash had already been collected.

Roberto Nicola Toscano, director of SANB, the local waste management company, recounted the frantic efforts that ensued. “We reconstructed the journey of the ticket, without much hope of finding it, as it had already been picked up by a garbage truck,” he noted. The situation soon took a more complicated turn when they identified the truck but discovered it could not be emptied at their facility due to concerns over waste contamination.
Undeterred, Toscano and his team undertook the daunting task of sifting through more than six tons of refuse in search of the discarded ticket. Despite the odds, their efforts paid off when they remarkably discovered the ticket stub intact. Toscano revealed, “Among them was the stub we were looking for, which was miraculously still in one piece.” The overwhelming joy experienced by the woman upon hearing the news was visible, with Toscano sharing that she “cried with emotion.”
The story took a lighter turn when Toscano, in a moment of humour, joked about having “touched the lucky ticket in the hope that it might bring us some luck too.” Following their success, he and his team decided to try their luck further by purchasing a scratch card while they enjoyed a coffee. To their astonishment, they won an additional €50 from the card, further adding to the day’s extraordinary events.
In the wake of the ticket’s recovery, the anonymous winner navigated the additional costs incurred from the search efforts conducted by the public agency. Once these expenses were settled, she was able to fully embrace her windfall, relishing a uniquely fortunate experience.
“This story is nothing short of miraculous,” Toscano remarked, emphasising the astonishing nature of the events that unfolded. The local community has since celebrated not only the woman’s good fortune but also the remarkable persistence of the waste management team who refused to give up in their quest to recover the ticket.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of luck, and how sometimes, fortune can literally be found amidst the refuse of everyday life. The team’s commitment to retrieving the ticket has not only changed the life of one woman but also highlighted the significance of teamwork and community spirit in overcoming challenges.
As the tale continues to attract attention, it reinforces the notion that even in seemingly hopeless circumstances, a blend of diligence, hope, and perhaps a sprinkle of luck can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
