Abby Finn, 24, and her partner Luke have made significant life changes over the past year, culminating in a bold move from the United States to Costa Rica. The couple achieved their dream by saving an impressive £48,000, a feat they accomplished through rigorous financial discipline and a strong commitment to their goal.
The journey began following a transformative trip to India, where they attended a friend’s wedding. This experience ignited their desire to explore life outside the U.S., an aspiration they had discussed for years. Upon returning home, they realised they wanted to make their dreams a reality sooner rather than later. Finn shared, “After our trip, we asked ourselves what was holding us back. The U.S. felt too expensive, stressful, and ultimately made us unhappy.”

However, the initial excitement soon gave way to exhaustion as the couple faced grueling schedules, including multiple 13-hour workdays, alongside learning Spanish and conducting extensive research about their prospective new home. “The fatigue set in rapidly,” Finn confessed. “We found solace in the thought of our end goal, but it often meant sacrificing family gatherings, holidays, and even time to exercise.”
In conjunction with their efforts to earn more, they also focused on cutting living expenses. One of their best decisions was to sell Luke’s car, opting to share Abby’s vehicle. “This adjustment quickly became part of our routine,” she noted, adding that now sharing one car feels entirely normal to her.
The couple also adopted various cost-saving measures, such as meal prepping to streamline their food expenses and avoid spontaneous spending during social outings. They even requested practical moving items as gifts instead of traditional birthday or Christmas presents. Interestingly, their going-away party helped reduce costs, as guests took home plants and belongings they no longer wished to keep.
Looking back on the year, Finn reflected on their sacrifices with pride. “We don’t regret a single decision. If anything, we could have been even stricter with ourselves when it came to spending on certain indulgences,” she laughed, mentioning her caffeine habit.
Today, Finn works remotely, which offers her the flexibility she long sought. The couple’s dedicated savings journey has ultimately led them to a life they had long envisioned. Finn asserted, “I would do it all again without hesitation, and I suspect we will.”
