Rocky Mount Police Chief Martin McCoy Sr. spoke to local news outlets about the ongoing investigation, stating, “We’re looking at every angle.” The police were called to the residence on King Charles Court around 10:45 AM to perform a welfare check, following concerns raised by the family.

According to reports, the Swanns’ power had been disconnected shortly before the tragedy, allegedly due to an outstanding utility bill exceeding £1,500, which the utility company refused to adjust for partial payments. Tracey’s daughter, Krista Crisp, expressed her concern, noting that she had not heard from her mother since a planned outing on August 1. When a family member visited the home, they reported an overwhelming smell that suggested something was amiss.

In the wake of their power disconnection, neighbours have indicated that Kenny Swann sought to resolve the situation by paying a sum of £750 to the utility company at one point, but it proved insufficient to restore service. Demetrius Wright, a neighbour, shared that Kenny had mentioned the financial strain caused by the power outage. He then resorted to retrieving a generator from his mother’s house to maintain some comfort in their home.
The police are currently investigating whether the generator might have been operational in the mobile home, potentially leading to carbon monoxide poisoning, although foul play is not suspected at this stage. The precise causes of death remain under investigation, and authorities have yet to release further details in this regard.
The Swann family, known for their generosity, left behind a grieving son, Kenyan Patterson, who reflected on his parents’ struggles during this difficult time. He expressed his surprise at how much his parents had been grappling with financially and highlighted the importance of seeking help in challenging times. “Everybody goes through something, and people just need help, even though they might not call out for it,” he shared. His comments serve as a reminder of the often hidden burdens many families carry.
As news of this tragedy continues to ripple through the community, local authorities and family members are calling attention to the need for support systems for families facing financial hardship. The City of Rocky Mount and the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have yet to issue comments regarding the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of this heartbreaking situation.
The local community, meanwhile, has expressed an outpouring of grief and shock over the events. It serves as a poignant reminder of the need for vigilance in checking on loved ones and neighbours, especially those who might be facing unseen difficulties. In light of this incident, advocates are emphasising the necessity for community spirit and support networks to ensure that families in distress are not left to navigate their struggles alone.
As the investigation continues, community members are hoping for answers and looking to honour the memory of the Swann family, whose tragic fate highlights critical social issues that warrant further attention and action.
